Wallace W. Abbey, 1927–2014, had a long career as a railroad journalist and public relations executive. A native of Chicago and graduate of the journalism program at the University of Kansas, he joined the staff of Trains magazine in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1950, where he worked alongside legendary editor David P. Morgan. Transitioning to a railroad industry career in public relations, he held executive positions at the Soo Line in Minneapolis, Minnesota, as well as at the Milwaukee Road in Chicago. The insider access afforded by his career allowed the talented photographer to capture a singular perspective of railroading in the Upper Midwest spanning the dramatic period of the 1940s through the 1970s.

Kevin P. Keefe is a Milwaukee-based journalist. He was the editor of Trains magazine from 1992 through 2000 and subsequently served as the magazine’s publisher. He was also vice president–editorial at the parent firm of Trains, Kalmbach Publishing Co., until he retired in 2016. He is a director of the Center for Railroad Photography & Art. His award-winning book Twelve Twenty-Five: The Life and Times of a Steam Locomotive was published in 2016 by Michigan State University Press.

Scott Lothes is president and executive director of the Center for Railroad Photography & Art in Madison, Wisconsin, and editor of its journal, Railroad Heritage. He is also a freelance author and award-winning photographer whose work appears frequently in Trains, Railfan & Railroad, and other national publications. Originally from West Virginia, he was graduated magna cum laude from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, in 2002. He served as the assistant editor of the engineering magazine Sound & Vibration and taught English at a high school in Sapporo, Japan, prior to joining the Center’s staff in 2008.

The Center for Railroad Photography & Art,

www.railphoto-art.org, is a nonprofit arts and education organization based in Madison, Wisconsin, whose mission is to preserve and present significant images of railroading. Its work includes preserving collections of railroad photography and art (including that of Wallace W. Abbey), preparing and circulating traveling exhibitions, publishing a quarterly journal and books, hosting conferences and other events, and making annual awards for creative photography.
