  ABOUT THE AUTHORS

MARTIN SHEEN was born (and still is) Ramon Antonio Gerardo Estevez. Sheen is perhaps best known for his unforgettable performances in Badlands (1973), Apocalypse Now (1979), Wall Street (1987), and as President Josiah Bartlet on television’s The West Wing (1999–2006). A longtime activist for social justice and human rights, in 2008 he received the Laetare Medal from the University of Notre Dame for his humanitarian work. He holds an honorary arts doctorate from the National University of Ireland. He lives in Malibu, California, with his wife of fifty years, Janet.

EMILIO ESTEVEZ is known for his roles in The Outsiders (1983), The Breakfast Club (1985), Young Guns, and Young Guns II (1988, 1990), and as Coach Gordon Bombay in The Mighty Ducks films (1992, 1994, 1996). More recently, he’s made a mark as a writer and director willing to tackle complicated social subjects (The War at Home, Bobby). With his partner, Sonja Magdevski, he is coproprietor of Casa Dumetz vineyards in Malibu, which produces organically farmed Pinot Noir as well as Viognier, Grenache, and Syrah from Tierra Alta Vineyards in Santa Ynez, California. Their microfarm also produces eggs, honey, and organic vegetables.

HOPE EDELMAN is the author of five prior nonfiction books, including the international bestseller Motherless Daughters and the national bestsellers Motherless Mothers and The Possibility of Everything. She lives with her husband and two daughters in Topanga Canyon, California.
