“Shut it,” Dmitry fussed, making Josh fall silent. His expression turned serious as he stared down at Josh as if trying to decide where he should start. “Last night, that was about protecting what’s mine. That’s something I’ll always do.”
“I wouldn’t expect anything less. Kip and Jade are family.”
“And I believe I told you to hush,” Dmitry said, making it obvious he wasn’t feeling up to interruptions. “However, in spite of my falling off the wagon last night, I’ve been retired for two years now.” Dmitry shook his head. “In fact, I’ve been downright boring, if you don’t count stalking you. Hell, I bought a house in the suburbs for you. If that doesn’t scream ordinary, I don’t know what does.”
Josh licked his lips, unsure he should interrupt yet. He couldn’t take it. “Two years? What have you been doing with yourself?”
Dmitry swayed. Josh’s heart lurched until Dmitry’s swapped positions, coming to rest on Josh’s chest. Their bare skin pressed against each other. Dmitry released a happy-sounding sigh. “Much better,” he said, sounding content. “I told you, I’ve been stalking you. This is what I’ve been holding out for, though—your skin against mine. Of course, in my fantasies, there were less stitches.”
“Huh,” Josh said for lack of anything more. “I expected it to be harder.”
“Well, I did lose a lot of blood.”
A snort escaped Josh at Dmitry’s asinine comment. “I meant I expected you to argue or something.”
Dmitry snuggled in as close as possible, as if seeking warmth. Josh snagged the comforter and covered them up. “Thank you.” The exhaustion in Dmitry’s voice had Josh’s heart turning over in his chest. “It’s so cold in here. Nothing matters as much as you do, Jozsua. You’re my Everglades snowflake. I want to stay like we are now. My whole life, I’ve been off in the head. You’re the first healthy obsession I’ve ever had. If you want normal, that’s what you’ll get. We’ll be the most unexceptional people for miles around.”
Josh couldn’t stop smiling. His cheeks ached from it. Dmitry spoke as if it would be so easy—simple. “Let’s not get carried away,” Josh argued, letting happiness carry away with his mouth. “I’m too kinky to fall too far down the boring well.”
Dmitry held his stare. Light blue eyes so light in coloration they were definitely gray watched Josh with interest. Their heat had always been ten times hotter than anyone else’s on the planet when he looked at Josh. It was an addiction Josh didn’t care to shake. “I hope you never ask me to give up punishing you for loving me. We have a cabin in the woods now. No one can hear you scream or moan.”
“I’d kill us both before letting you go.”
A smile exploded across Dmitry’s face at the threat. “The streets will run red before I ever let you get away.”
“We’re fucked in the head,” Josh said, hearing his happiness in every word.
He felt more than saw Dmitry shrug. “What’s it matter? We keep all the crazy locked up between us.”
“Speaking of locked up,” Josh said, hearing the sex dripping from every word. “Whatever happened to those handcuffs we used to have?”
“Went up in the blaze.”
Josh settled deeper into the mattress, ready to hang on to Dmitry for life. “Probably for the best. You need to recover.”
Dmitry’s hand found its way between Josh’s legs. He swiped Josh’s growing erection before slipping Josh’s zipper down. “I’m hurt. Not dead. You’d be amazed what I can still do at half capacity.”
The tightening of his groin had Josh’s voice turning husky. “You’ve kept me amazed since the first time we met, but I’m willing to let you try to impress me.”
The evil-sounding laugh leaving Dmitry’s lips almost had Josh ready to take back his taunt. He already knew Dmitry could be downright sadistic. Since Josh liked it, he held his silence and breath, waiting for Dmitry’s next move. He was willing to bet good money—whatever it was—it would be completely insane and would steal Josh’s breath. He couldn’t fucking wait.
