They both chuckled, Tanis leaving August standing alone so he could go say good-bye to his parents. Taking one last, long look around, August stepped onto the boat, then froze. The hairs on the back of his neck stood on end, trepidation settling in at the bottom of his spine. He turned, searching the crops of trees and wildlife surrounding the clearing, seeing no one, nothing. Shaking it off and chalking it up to nerves about leaving the only home he’d ever known, he walked the length of the deck to the other side, wrapping an arm around Hector and settling in for the long journey to his new home.

The man slid back into the shadows, the darkness of his skin allowing him to blend into his surroundings unnoticed. From his perch just beyond the guard house, hidden by a grouping of trees, he watched August climb onto the ship and sail away with the man he’d chosen over his family and friends, over his own people. Escaping the room he’d been kept in within the walls of the palace had been easy enough. With everyone preoccupied with the departures of all the Ambassadors, Robert had easily slipped out of the palace without so much as a second glance.
Watching his closest friend embrace the man with the brown hair, the one that had placed his body in front of August the day Robert learned August had betrayed him, betrayed them all—it infuriated him to the point of insanity. Listening to the whispers of the men tasked with guarding him, he knew Cillian had been killed by the man he’d kidnapped and tortured just before recruiting Robert and August, the husband of the young Prince. Robert was aware of everything, thanks to the loose-lipped guards.
Striking now would only end badly; Robert knew that. No, he had to bide his time and wait. He waited until the clearing was empty, all the ships having sailed away, and the darkness of night fell to leave his perch. There was a cave one day’s journey north he could hide out in and regroup. Soon the former Priest, his husband, and their son would travel to House Orion to visit family. And when they did, Robert would be on that ship. “You wanted revenge Augie, and you’re gonna get it—on my terms.”
