  “Perhaps, but there’s no way to prove who it was,” she replied. “Everyone would try to take the credit in order to claim the reward.”

  “You’re right,” Lionel said. As usual, he added silently. He’d heard enough about golden owls and master criminals. It was time for breakfast. “Did you bring any pastries?” he asked.

  She handed him a small brown bag full of savory sweets. Lionel’s eyes gleamed as he accepted the gift.

  Cali’s ears perked up, her nose wiggling at the familiar scent. One of the pastries was definitely filled with cream cheese, a favorite of hers, and she suspected of Emmit’s as well. The clockwork calico stifled a laugh. It looked like the cat-and-mouse pair would get a reward for saving the owl after all.
