I clench my fists, steeling myself then throw myself into motion. I hear a bang. Another one. Two more steps. Thunder. Flashes of light. Something whizzes by my face. I feel heat but no pain. One more step. Jaxon reaches his hand out to me.
I am inches away from safety when the bullet slams into me. The force is enough to send me the last, flying step forward and Jaxon grasps my hand in his. I stumble into Jaxon and we teeter on the brink of falling. Pain overwhelms my senses. Fire burning through my entire body. I feel his arms wrap around me in a tight embrace. Then I am falling, falling, falling…
