Beautiful Nightmare Page 27

Kidd was in daze. He couldn’t believe Valencia was really gone. There was no coming back this time. He couldn’t wrap his mind around the fact that she was gone.

Moochie noticed that Mr. Jackson was still alive, and he couldn’t have that. He filled him up with lead, tearing his face off in the process. Neither he nor his daughter was going to have an open casket.

“We got to get out of here.” Moochie touched his brother’s shoulder. But Kidd wouldn’t budge. He couldn’t. His mind wouldn’t let him leave her side. Moochie tried to pick up Valencia, but Kidd wouldn’t let her go. “Come on, man. We have to go!” He shook his brother. Kidd finally looked up at his brother. It broke Moochie’s heart to see him like that. Kidd got up with Valencia still in his arms. He just imagined she was sleeping, and technically, she was; she just was never going to wake up again.

Sena sat at Valencia’s grave site, and it still felt weird to her. It had been almost a year, and the memory of that day was still fresh in her mind. She couldn’t believe the happiest day in her life had turned into the most horrible day. They hadn’t told her all the details of what happened, but they did tell her it was because of something that Raven had done. Her sister was gone, but at least Vee got to meet baby Deonna before she passed. She was cleaning the leaves around the area and had asked the boys to wait a little longer to come up because she wanted some alone time. But she could see them walking up now. She really felt bad for Kidd. He had been through so much with Vee, only for her to be taken away again, only this time, in front of his eyes. He had lost her before, but there was no coming back this time.

“Hey, you all right?” Moochie asked as he and Kidd walked up. Kidd was holding the baby.

“Yeah, I guess so.” She wiped the tears from her face.

“Hey, sis,” Moochie said as he placed the yellow lilies on Valencia’s headstone. He helped Sena up off the ground.

“We’ll let you talk to her,” Sena said as she patted Kidd on the shoulder.

He stood there, reading her headstone for what felt like the thousandth time. Valencia Renée Brown, Born July 13, 1982, Deceased April 2, 2016. Beloved Wife, Sister, and Friend. He kneeled down to finish what Sena had started and placed her favorite flower, birds-of-paradise, down in front of the grave. He stared at her name. It had cost him a pretty penny to get them to change her last name. They weren’t married by law, but they were in their hearts.

“Hey, you know I ask myself every day why I didn’t go outside with you that day. I feel so guilty for what happened to you. I miss you so much. At first, I didn’t think I would make it. I see why you kept Sena around for so many years. She a little crazy, but you couldn’t have picked a better person to be your sister. She helped me through everything. I was supposed to be there for her, yet, she was comforting me. It was like I finally got you back; then you were snatched away again. Man, nobody will ever know what that did to my heart. I am so sorry I wasn’t there for you. I will have to live with that for the rest of my life. I love you and know that no one will ever replace you. You are still my heart, my smile, and my happiness. I will love you for life, Mrs. Brown.”

He cleared a couple more leaves away and got up. Then he kissed his index and middle fingers and placed them on her name. He walked away knowing she heard everything he said and was smiling up in heaven looking down on him.
