Rescue Ships
USS BASSETT (APD-73) Redesignated as a Charles Lawrence–class high-speed transport. Commissioned 23 February 1945. Lieutenant Commander Harold J. Theriault USNR in command at time of rescue. Rescued 151 men.
USS CECIL J. DOYLE (DE-368) John C. Butler–class. Commissioned 16 October 1944. Commanding officer at time of rescue: Lieutenant Commander William Graham Claytor, Jr., USNR, who became Secretary of the Navy in 1977. Rescued 93 men (including the 53 men brought on board from Marks’s PBY and one survivor from Lt. Alcorn’s Catalina).I
USS DUFILHO (DE-423) John C. Butler–class. Commissioned 21 July 1944. Commander A. H. Nienau, USNR, in command during rescue.
Nienau, who was circulation man for the Seattle Star before the war, pieced together radio messages regarding “debris in the water” and sped to the debris coordinates. Arriving after dark, Dufilho lookouts spotted a lone survivor, Seaman Second Class Francis H. Rineay of New Orleans. While the whaleboat was picking up Seaman Rineay, Dufilho’s sonar picked up a strong sonar contact only nine hundred yards away. Concerned that the Japanese submarine might still be lurking in the area, Dufilho attacked with depth charges and hedgehogs. After twenty minutes with no evidence of a destroyed submarine, Dufilho picked up the whaleboat and survivor and commenced screening for the rescue operation until 4:15 p.m. the following day, when she was released to return to Leyte.
