Something vibrated between her leg and his crotch. He jumped back as she reached into her lab coat with a sigh and slid the phone from her pocket. “The CIA has horrible timing.”
“You're kidding. Right now? But I'm on leave for the next five days. I was hoping we could, you know, go on a normal date or something.” His lips turned to a pouty frown.
Jayla read the text. Two simple words which sent her heart racing to a dizzying degree. Amaranthine and Russians. Shit. Which meant that somehow Jayla's case was now related to Melinda's.
“What's wrong?” Noah ran a hand along her arm, sending a comforting warmth to her bones.
“Shit just got really complicated.”
Worry pained his eyes. “Between us?”
“Oh, no. We're fine.” She waved her hand and reread the words in the text over in her mind until they lost all meaning. “I mean with the botched mission. I'm pretty sure someone's trying to kill me. And I think it's the CIA. So I should probably figure out who it is. Since you and I are a thing now, me dying would really put a damper on our brand new relationship.” She pulled him in for a kiss, but he halted, tightening his fingers around her upper arms.
The fiery glare in his eyes sent her heart thundering. “Wait … what?” She loved that intense look he got, such passion and conviction. “What the hell are you talking about? You think the CIA is setting you up?”
She nodded. “Yup. Bahri pretty much confirmed that when he knew I was coming and poisoned me. Hence your need to save me the first time. But, I'm guessing it's someone directly related to this arms deal. Probably in cahoots with whoever Bahri works for. And now there's a new caveat. Melinda's drug research is somehow involved. And the Russians.” A knot of worry tugged at her belly. She had no idea how she'd pull this one off.
“So you're just going to throw yourself into harm's way?”
“I have to. Or I'm a sitting duck. I figured they botched attempt number one to get rid of me. They're eventually going to try and finish what they started.”
“Well, then you're definitely not doing it alone. What do we do?” He didn't skip a beat. Never hesitated. Jumped all in. Just like a SEAL. Her SEAL.
A sly grin burst over her lips. “We wait until I get my mission details. Maybe do a little preemptive snooping until then. But for now, we go back to my place and have sex, and then you cook me dinner.”
