Only You: Second Chance Series Page 10

by Luxx Monroe

I want to give you everything you’ve ever wanted. I want to make a life for us that would end up at the end of a storybook. I’ve never wanted any of that man’s money, but I want to use it for us. It’s the least that bastard could do. We’ll only use what we need, and we’ll build our own life with it. We’ll make our way, and we’ll be happy.

I squeezed Dax’s hand again and smiled up at him. We were going to be happy, and for some reason moving to New York City had me almost as excited as our upcoming wedding. Almost.

“There you are!” Krista squealed, but then stopped suddenly when she saw my hand was in Dax’s. “And there you are. Holding hands with my best friend.” Krista took a few seconds to look back and forth before her expression turned to shock and she placed her hand over her mouth. “He’s your new guy? Dax?” She tried to say more, but her mouth was moving and no words were coming out.

Dax and I both laughed nervously, because really, what else could we do?

“I think it’s great,” Gary said and slapped Dax’s shoulder a few times. “Lena needs a good guy, and I couldn’t think of anyone better than this guy right here.”

Krista was still in shock and was now looking between all three of us. “You knew?” Krista yelled and slapped Gary across his chest.

“Ow! No, woman, geez. Well, yes, I figured it out a few weeks ago, but I didn’t want to be the one to rock the boat. So I kept my mouth shut.”

We all looked at Gary and busted out laughing. Well, everyone except Krista. “I can’t believe you didn’t say anything. We’ll talk about that later.” Then she turned back toward me and looked at me very closely. “I had no idea, Lena. Why didn’t you tell me?”

I could feel my cheeks redden, and I wasn’t sure how to begin, so I went with the truth. “I was scared I’d ruin our friendship.”

Krista’s face softened and she pulled me in for a very tight hug. “You should never think that. Sure, Dax is like a kid brother to me, but I’ve never seen you happier than you have been this summer. And it’s all thanks to my nephew. I guess I should be thanking him.”

Krista pulled away and gave me a huge smile and then turned to Dax. “Thank you, Dax, for bringing my best friend back. She needed you, apparently.”

We all smiled, and Dax grabbed my hand again and gave me the best look in the world. “We have something else to tell you,” Dax said, never taking his eyes from mine.

Krista looked frantically between us and motioned for us to spill. “Well, what is it?” she asked in a high voice and looked over at Gary, who shrugged his shoulders.

“We’re getting married.” I said and squealed when Dax picked me up and twirled me around in the air.

Krista gasped and looked down at my stomach. “You aren’t pregnant, are you?” she asked with such hope that it made me a little sad.

“No, no baby,” I said and looked over at Dax for some help.

“Nope, but hopefully we’ll change that very soon.”

The rest of the evening was so perfect that I was afraid I’d wake up from it all at any moment. Krista was beyond excited for us, and I thought for sure she’d take it harder than she did. The only reason she was upset in the first place was because I’d felt like I’d had to hide it from her.

Later that afternoon, when Dax and I got to my place, we made love for hours and talked nonstop about our future life. I couldn’t stop staring at the ring he’d given me earlier that morning. It had belonged to his mother, and the fact that he trusted me to wear it meant more to me than he’d ever know.

We’d put the house on the market right away, and I resigned from my job. His dream of opening a hotel in New York City was about to become a reality. He told me that he wanted to get started right away with the baby-making aspect of the marriage and began to research the best fertility doctors in the city, but I told him it would all come in time. Was I nervous as hell? Yes, who wouldn’t be? But one thing I did know was that I’d found my forever. I’d found my second chance at a happily ever after.

  EPILOGUE

  Two Years Later

I’d gotten the call. The call that Dax and I had been waiting for for over two weeks.

  “Is Mrs. Tice available?”

  “Yes, this is she.”

“Hey, Lena. It’s Tracy from Dr. Evan’s office, and I have the results from your latest pregnancy test.”

Breathe. Either way, we’d be fine. “Okay,” I said in a quiet voice.

“Dr. Evans really wanted to be the one to deliver the news to you and Dax, but I guess I’m the lucky one.”

Lucky? “Okay,” I said again, trying not to get my hopes up.

“Lena, you’re pregnant. Congratulations!” Tracy’s voice raised a few octaves, and we both squealed with delight. I’d gotten to know the staff at my fertility doctor’s office over the past year, and this was a huge win for all of us. Mostly because it was the last time we were going to try in vitro.

“Oh, God. I’m pregnant.” The tears started to flow, and at that moment I’d never been so excited in all my life. Well, except when I’d promised my love and life to Dax at our wedding. That was pretty freaking great, but this was different. We were going to have a baby.

“Lena, that’s not all. Your hormone levels are twice what they should be, which only means one thing.”

“Twins,” we both said at the same time. Both of my fertilized eggs took. We were having twins.

Thinking back to the conversation I’d had earlier that morning made my eyes tear up with happiness. I wanted to tell Dax in the best possible way, so after spending all day planning how to break the wonderful news, I went with a classic. Looking over at the two little buns I’d put in the oven made me laugh, and I knew he’d appreciate my sense of humor.

We’d been praying and trying for a baby for the past year and a half, knowing it was going to be a long road. It was finally happening. We were going to be parents. I knew Dax was going to be the best daddy in the world, and I just hoped I could keep up with him.

Our hotel was also kicking ass and taking names. Living in the penthouse was a huge bonus, but watching Dax’s dreams come true made everything I’d been through before him make sense. I had to have those moments to truly understand and appreciate how perfect my life was at that moment. Dax was so busy that we could go a whole day without speaking, and after my treatments I was directed to take it easy, so staying in our place all day wasn’t unusual. Now I appreciated that. Surprising him that afternoon was going to be worth it.

A few minutes later I heard his loud voice. “Babe, I’m home. Sorry I didn’t stop by earlier and check on you. It’s been bat-shit crazy down there.” He stopped when he saw me standing in our kitchen, holding a kitchen mitt in my hands.

“What are you doing?” he asked me suspiciously and walked over to kiss my cheek.

“I made dinner,” I said with a huge grin and moved out of the way so he could open the oven door.

He looked really confused, but went along with me. “Okay,” he said and hung on to the last part of the word. Dax loved my cooking, but I never waited until he got home to take it out of the oven. I usually had it ready for him on the table.

When he pulled out the baking sheet with two perfect little buns on it, he looked even more confused. “You made two buns?” he asked and looked at me like I was completely losing my shit.

“Yeah, two buns,” I said and couldn’t help but start to laugh and cry at the same time.

Dax was so fucking confused by everything that I could tell he wanted to know what was going through my crazy mind, but he couldn’t. He was that lost. “Thanks, hun,” he said, which made me laugh even harder. And then cry some more.

“What’s wrong?” he asked and set down the sheet with our two little buns.

“I made two buns,” I said and hugged him tightly to me.

Nodding, he grabbed my arms and pushed me back so he could see my face. “I’m sure I’ll love them, babe. Don’t get sad if they didn’t turn out r
ight.”

Now I was hysterically laughing, which only made him cock one of his brows.

“Dax, two buns.” I tried to stop crying and motioned to the hamburger buns on the counter.

“Yeah, you made two buns in the oven. That’s—” His voice cut off. “Wait, two buns in the oven?” he asked and looked down at my stomach. I nodded quickly and started to cry all over again. “Are you fucking kidding me? Two buns!” he hollered and scooped me up in his arms, twirling me around.

“Yes,” I said through sobs and kissed him with such passion that I wouldn’t be surprised if the doctors found a third baby in there.

“Oh, Lena.” He grabbed my cheeks and smiled so big that I thought he was going to burst. “I love you so much.”

Seven-and-a-half months later, Tyler and Tynleigh would make their appearance three weeks earlier than planned, but they were perfect.

Tyler would have his daddy’s looks, and Tynleigh inherited my bright blue eyes. To say our lives were perfect would be a stretch, but it was perfect to us. Life will always throw you those damn lemons, so you can either make lemonade or destroy the shit out of them and make your own future. Only you get to decide the fate of those fucking lemons.
