Tarek and Izzy sat behind me, while Sadig and Dobia sat beside me, and the plane prepared to take off. The engines started up and the aeroplane stared to speed down the runway, but the sounds of the engines were being drowned out by a voice in my own head.
“Please God! Please God! Please God!” I begged, worried that at any moment the soldiers would stop the plane and drag us out.
As we sped down the runway, and the plane lifted off into the air, I started to weep uncontrollably, trying to stay as silent as I possibly could, so not to bring attention to myself. When I finally stopped crying, and the plane was fully in flight, I ripped off my sharsharf. Then I made a promise to myself.
I would never allow what happened to me in my past affect the rest of my future, or those of my children!
Even though I knew we would always be hunted, I also knew we were going to be able to live the rest of our lives as free human beings. My children would never be forced into doing anything beyond their own wishes, and I would live my life the best I possibly could.
I also knew I needed to find out the truth about what really happened to my mother, and I would never stop fighting to be reunited with the ones I loved!
