"Go to sleep, Janna. I will explain tomorrow."
She had a million questions racing through her mind. She knew he would tell her at the cemetery, but tomorrow was a long time to wait. She didn't expect to sleep, but she did.
Chapter Five - Kidnapped
She was cold. She shivered. Where was her blankets? She felt around and encountered a cold mossy stone surface. She was locked in somewhere. Had Josh done this? Why did she not wake up?
She jumped as a familiar voice spoke, "Ahh, so, you are awake."
She peered in the dim light. It was Samantha. Josh's sister.
"Where am I?"
Josh's sister continued to talk as though Janna hadn't uttered a word, "I know who he thinks you are. But you are not. I am the rightful one to inherit those powers. Josh loves me. How could he love you? You are plain. You are nobody."
Janna wanted to ask Samantha what she meant, but she had decided that as cute as Josh was and despite the spark between them. She wanted to leave this town. It was a freaking nightmare. Josh was supposed to protect her, but she had no way of knowing that meant from his sister. She also no longer trusted Josh. He was supposed to protect her and look where she was.
"What are you going to do with me?"
"Me? Nothing? Except leave you to rot," said Samantha in a maniacal sort of way. "You ran away and was never heard from again. And your parents leave because there is too much sadness here. And I become the coven leader."
"Coven? As in witches?"
Samantha smiled and added, "And warlocks."
"You see this town and its leaders all belong to the Possle Coven. They are eager to accept mediocre power and lifestyles. I, on the other hand, want it all. And I want out of this. And I plan on taking Josh with me to rule by my side. We will take over all covens. You cannot appreciate the power that would have been yours. You would waste it on balance and mother nature. Those six people sacrificed themselves to return Nenti back to the underworld. Once I have your power, I will release him and reap the benefits."
Janna lay there shackled to the cold slab. Samantha was either crazy or very evil. And she was convinced that Samantha wasn't crazy, but she was one sick girl. She knew she needed to keep Samantha talking, and the only way to keep her here was to make her mad.
"Josh, Is mine, Samantha."
The laughter that escaped from the cheerleader's mouth was intensely spine crawling. She prayed over and over that Josh would find her and put a stop to this.
Josh woke up and found that Janna was gone. He immediately knew who had taken her. He didn't know how his sister had figured out who Janna was, but Samantha could not be allowed to inherit those powers that were due to Janna on her eighteenth birthday. He had to get Janna back before midnight on the eve of her birthday. And the eve of her birthday was only three and a half hours away. And then, he would have to destroy Samantha.
He called her parents and the other town members that had founded Possle. Everyone had known that Janna was the reincarnation of their former leader. Everyone knew, but Janna. Her parents had wanted their child to have a normal childhood before she had to step into the shoes as ruler by Josh's side.
After gathering weapons to fight what ever came there way, they all stood in a circle with their heads lowered and humbled themselves before the universe. They prayed that none was lost this night. They prayed that Janna could be saved. They prayed that Samantha was stopped. But most of all, they prayed that Nenti did not appear before Janna was gifted with her rightful wisdom and power. All would be lost for everyone around the globe if that happened.
They made their way to the park. They knew exactly where Janna was being held. The only place she could be on this night that she was to be gifted. Each member made their way to the chamber beneath the six graves. And as they passed within, they prayed even more that the six had not sacrificed themselves in vain for mankind.
They did not try to sneak into the chamber. There was no point. Samantha knew that they would be there.
Samantha spoke in a overly excited tone, "Brother dear, my love, you kept me waiting. But I knew you would show. We must do away with this imposter."
He did not bother to look at Janna as he spoke, "Samantha, please do no do this. You and the others need to stop. And by others, I mean the three betrayers in our midst. The three of you should cross over to Samantha. Do not think that I haven't known. I prayed that all of you would come to your senses before it was too late."
The two men and one woman crossed over to form the group of four. It wasn't lost that the remainder of the followers of light made six in all. Truthfully, all was as it was meant to be. There were six sacrifices and six members to inherit and continue on. Janna was the last of the group that was to inherit.
All had gained their powers at eighteen. And what the others that followed Samantha failed to realize was that the powers they had were borrowed. And Josh lifted his hand as he spoke, "Nentah, remove that which was gifted and render the false ones powerless."
Samantha and the other three fell to their knees as the power was sucked from their very souls. Samantha looked up at Josh with tears in her eyes. She arched backwards and her body bent as her mouth opened. The light flew from all four false members and they were no more. It was if they had disappeared into thin air.
Josh released Janna and pulled her to him. This time when his mouth came down upon hers, it was forceful and he took the kiss from her. She moaned softly and wrapped her arms around his neck. He was her soul. He was her balance, and she belonged beside him. There was a cough that broke the two apart.
Janna's father spoke, "It is time."
Janna was placed back on the slab, but this time she was lying on a purple velvet covering. She trembled as Josh placed the amulet of the sun around her neck. She trembled not from fear, but from the amount of energy pouring in through the stone alignment. And of course from the closeness of Josh.
She screamed as her body jerked up off the slab and levitated about five inches off the slab. Then, the tingling and burning began to dissipate as Josh plucked her from mid air.
Josh announced, "It is done. Our new leader. The blessed one of Nentah. And once again, Nenti was locked safely in the underworld."
It all seemed to happen so quickly and easily. But there were so many things that could have gone wrong. And no one wanted to mention those. They were just happy that the coven was intact and the followers of light had overcome the dark once again.
