  He cracked up. “I don’t bake.”

  “They’ll never know. It’s either that or a box of Twinkies from the convenience store. Take your pick.”

  He came over to her and took the cookies out of her hand. “Okay, cookies it is.”

  She stood on tiptoe to give him a kiss, and he pulled her to him, flattening the platter of cookies against her back as he did. Maggie thought about saying something, but the decided she would take a kiss and broken cookies over no kiss and perfect cookies. When the kiss ended, he smiled down at her.

  “Merry Christmas, my love.”
