  ‘That hole ready?’

‘As ready as a hole can be,’ said House, climbing out.

Alex turned to Spit, handing him the book.

‘Here,’ he said. ‘You throw it in. Finish off Dante good and proper.’

Spit took the book and held it for a moment.

‘The Necronomicon. It could be very useful –’

  ‘Spit!’

  ‘Just kidding.’

And he tossed it into the hole.

‘What good is burying it going to do anyway?’ asked Cherry, as House started piling earth on top of the book.

‘It’s the best we can do,’ said Inchy. ‘We can’t destroy it; so unless you fancy some pretty scary bedtime reading?’

‘OK, burying it is fine by me,’ said Cherry hurriedly. ‘But what about the “master” that Dante was talking about? Won’t he be looking for it? That could be really dodgy.’

‘It is really dodgy,’ said Inchy as the hole slowly filled up. ‘Because it means that there’s probably another demon in Green Hill. One even more powerful than Dante.’

  ‘That sounds bad,’ muttered House.

‘It is,’ grinned Spit. ‘Lucky you’ve got a demon slayer in the gang, isn’t it?’

‘You’re not so ugly when you smile,’ said Alex.

‘And you’re not so annoying when you shut up,’ Spit shot back.

Before Alex could reply, a terrible cry rent the air.

  ‘Dante!’ moaned House. ‘He’s back!’

‘Doesn’t sound like Dante,’ replied Alex, as the cry came again. ‘More like Tabbris.’

  ‘He doesn’t sound happy.’

  ‘He probably isn’t,’ said Spit.

  Alex turned.

  ‘Why not?’

Spit shrugged shiftily, and suddenly a terrible thought occurred to Alex.

‘That silver dust in the waterbombs. Where did you get it?’

  ‘You know. Around.’

‘Spit. Where did you get it?’

‘Oh,’ said Spit, sidling towards the trees. ‘I just smashed Tabbris’s Order of Raphael medal into tiny little bits.’

For a moment the rest of the gang stood dumbstruck. Then they heard Tabbris coming down the garden.

‘Vandals! Thieves! Wait until Gabriel hears about this!’

Alex glanced at his friends. They may have defeated Dante and uncovered a demonic plot in Green Hill, but if they still needed Tabbris to approve their return, it didn’t look like they’d be going back to Heaven any time soon.

  ‘Don’t panic – I have a plan.’

  The team stared at Alex.

  ‘Run!’
