Two people were crucial to my winning the lottery – otherwise known as landing a book contract: a thousand thanks to Noel Whittaker, and the amazing Jon Attenborough, who is now my agent. A couple of others kept me going with their morale-boosting enthusiasm and encouragement: Ann Rickard, Donald Stewart.
Of course, most of the heavy lifting is done by those great people at Simon & Schuster Australia: Dan Ruffino, Fiona Henderson, Jo Munroe and the hard-working marketing team, with a special nod to my editors Roberta Ivers and Deonie Fiford, who both shaped and nurtured my first novel.
Finally, my undying love and thanks to my wife Patricia, who tirelessly read every word and every line of every draft and gave me honest (sometimes brutally honest) feedback. She was such a heavy-hitter that I named a cyclone in the book after her.
