“It doesn’t work like that. You let her go first. And then I’ll take you outside to where I hid the formula. See? I even brought a flashlight,” I stammered as I took it out and aimed it at the front window.

  “Stop shining that…”

  THUD!

“What the hell was that?” one of the guys grumbled as they all looked at the door.

“You two check it out,” the Cook muttered as he stared at me. “If you signaled the cops, you’re both dead.”

The guys opened the door opened revealing Pete on the mower. He had taped the bats and shovels I had bought to the front. Sadly, the mower barely scratched the door.

“Seriously, that’s your rescue plan?!” Casey shouted.

“Hey, shut her up!” the Cooked yelled. The guy looked at the Cook for a brief second which is all the time Casey needed. She kicked him hard in the side and tossed him into the psychos holding me. I was able to break free and started punching the…

“Pete!” I shouted as I saw one of the goons grab his shirt and tried to pull him off the…

“Duck!” someone yelled from behind Pete and started shooting. It was Brigs!

The guys ducked, which gave Casey and I a chance to run for it. I was almost at the door when I saw the Cook had his gun aimed at Casey.

“Watch out!” I yelled as I dived right in front of the…

  BAM!

  Chapter 30

  Decision

  “Where am…”

“Try not to speak,” Brigs whispered as I opened my eyes. I tried to move, but I had tubes sticking out of me. I was in what looked like hospital room in an abandoned warehouse. I looked down and saw I was covered with a blanket. But judging from the mounds rising underneath I was still a woman. How? I only had enough of that chemical to…

“Do you remember who you are?” Brigs asked. I looked up and saw him and Casey standing right over me.

  “I’m Stevie. You’re Mr. Brigs,” I mumbled.

“Well, we can rule out total amnesia. So that’s…”

“Wait. I remember more. All the times we fought together,” I cried as I stared right at Casey. “When we were in Vegas together, and I told you how I felt about you for the very first time.”

“Stevie?” Casey whispered as she started to tear up and took my hand.

“Yeah, I remember it all. Like the time we...” Casey stopped me in mid-sentence as she planted a long lingering kiss on my lips. Even though I was in pain, I didn’t want this moment to…

“Ahem,” Brigs muttered which caused us both to come up for air. “So, Stevie, do you want the good news or the bad news?”

  “I guess the good news.”

“I might have found a way to restore your power back permanently, which will be a big help in dealing with the bad news.”

  “Which is?”

“Well, the Cook is in custody thanks to your efforts. And just now, I was able to retrieve a bit more information about the name we got from him before.”

  “So who is this person?”

“The Cook’s real boss—who also happens to be Pete’s dad. Still want to help us take him down, Stevie?”
