The Deed in the Attic Page 18

by K. D. McCrite

A hearty chowder simmered on the stove. The house was clean, well-lit, and two spare rooms lay in readiness. Trudy Jenkins, her husband, and twin girls would arrive in time for dinner, if all went according to plan. During the last couple of months, Annie and Trudy had become friends through Facebook, e-mail and phone calls. It had not taken much persuasion from Annie to talk Trudy into visiting Stony Point.

The members of the Hook and Needle Club, Jason, Ian, and Wally had all pitched in and spruced up Fairview until the cottage fairly glowed. Tomorrow, Annie would take the Jenkins to the property that had once belonged to them—and would again very soon. The deed lay on the shining walnut table in Fairview’s small dining room, signed by Annie. It now registered full ownership to Trudy Harper Jenkins.

Annie smiled a little, thinking of the moment she would return the property to its rightful owner.

She sighed happily, turned and went back into the front room. The Jenkins family would be there soon, but until then, she could work on her current project.

Annie picked up the deep green, oversized afghan she was making for LeeAnn. For a moment, she examined the intricate Queen Anne’s Lace stitches lovingly worked out of the yarn LeeAnn had sent her. She settled down in the armchair near the window so she could see the road.

With great contentment and much happiness, Annie looped the green yarn comfortably through her fingers and crocheted the next row. When she looked up again, she saw headlights coming up her driveway.

She rose and went to the door, a welcome-home invitation on her lips, warming her heart.
