The Daimler stands to my left, my belongings packed ready to be transported to Bedales, or Roedean, or wherever else I’ll endure another school year. My father occupies the front seat, his shoulders sagging under a weight he can never shed.
I take one step forward before looking to my right, where the stables stand before open countryside. My fortune may lie beyond the next corner, or in a distant field, but, as I lead my horse from his stable, I can do no more than follow Siena’s untrodden path of freedom as I ride barefoot and bareback into the infinite peace of a celestial cornflower sky.
