“What are you doing?” Erin asked. Laying on the floor and staring into closets, this one wasn’t on the list of things kids did.
“Where’s the kitty?”
“Oh!” Allie exclaimed. “You’re looking for Rachel. You’re close.” She teased open the door. “Shh.” Curled on the bottom shelf of the linen closet, the cat slept, her fluffy tail swept across her nose, paws tucked into a massive ball of fluff.
“Ahhh.” Willow whispered in awe. She reached in and touched Rachel’s soft fur. “There you are.”
The cat purred and Allie’s chest vibrated from the energy being generated between the child and sleepy feline. The way sunlight glistens through icicles, light twinkled around them, beautiful in its simplicity. From the moment she’d seen the girl on the step, there had been an undeniable connection, but she hadn’t expected this. This was meant to be.
“Oh,” Willow whispered, surprised. “I forgot you only had three paws. In my dream, you had all of them.” Wrong-Way Rachel lazily stretched out her single front paw, and rolled over for the little girl to stroke her furry belly.
Erin shot a glance at Allie. “How did she know?” she mouthed. “Did you…?”
Allie shrugged and reached for her hand, intertwining their fingers.
Willow glanced back at her new foster parents, a tentative smile on her lips. “I think I’m gonna like it here.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Makenzi Fisk grew up in a small town in Northwestern Ontario. She spent much of her youth outdoors, surrounded by the rugged landscape of the Canadian Shield. Moving west, she became a police officer with patrol, communications and forensic experience before transitioning to graphic design. She now works for herself.
Her first novel, Just Intuition, earned her Debut Author in the 2015 Golden Crown Literary Society Awards. Just Intuition was also a Mystery/Thriller Finalist in the 2015 Golden Crown Literary Awards and the 2014 Rainbow Awards. She is a Canadian Lesfic author, a member of ARWA, and GCLS.
