“Fine,” Dana said. “Suit yourself.”
“By the way,” Hugo said. “I was thinking about something…”
Dana sighed, already beginning to regret her decision in letting him tag along. For now, she would let him prattle on. It beat the howling winds and distant screech of car tires.
The city of Seattle opened her arms to the two teens, welcoming them into her heart, into her depths, into her dark soul.
Epilogue
THE SUN was beginning to set when the second half of the scouting squad filtered into the detention center. They were carrying bags of food from a local supermarket. Henry couldn’t pretend he was interested in what they had found. The same words had kept running through his mind ever since the half-breed had uttered them.
You might find it useful. Don’t forget it. It might be important.
Until now he’d managed to resist his curiosity, but his resolve finally broke. He couldn’t wait any longer. He had to see what it was.
Henry turned away from the window and walked down the corridor. He came to a set of battered lockers. He checked over his shoulders and then opened one.
He reached inside and took out a vial of blood. Her blood. Resistant blood that might hold the key to the cure.
Henry took a seat at a broken window, letting his legs dangle over the side. He peered down at the ground. He bit his finger, hard, and let the blood drip.
The world had become a simpler place in many ways. No one any longer went to work or had debts. Many didn’t even have homes. They had all become juvies. If they weren’t quick to adapt, they would be stuck with nowhere safe to go.
Henry liked the way things were, how the world now was. It wasn’t a step back, but a step forward. People needed to lose all the crap they once had. A simple life was the only one worth living.
But there were other things that complicated the situation. Dana and Hugo for one. Half-breeds. God knew how many like them there were out there. Maybe all the zombies were half-breeds to some extent, they just lacked a strong enough resistance.
In his hand he held what might be humanity’s greatest hope of a cure. He ought to rush to the nearest military encampment he could find and hand it over. He ought to, but he wouldn’t.
Henry unstoppered the vial and held it out at arm’s length. He thought for a moment, and then turned it upside down, spilling the contents onto the heads of a thousand infected below. They clawed and bit one another to get at the succulent fresh blood.
Henry got to his feet, casually took the pin off a grenade, and tossed it over the side. He walked away.
Sometimes the monsters became heroes, the heroes monsters. Henry wasn’t much into titles. He would be what he had always been. A survivor.
Boom.

Reviews are the most powerful tools in my arsenal when it comes getting attention for my books. Much as I’d like to, I don't have the financial muscle of a New York publisher. I can't take out full page ads in the newspaper or put posters on the subway.
But I do have something much more powerful and effective than that, and it's something that those publishers would kill to get their hands on.
A committed and loyal bunch of readers.
Honest reviews of my books help bring them to the attention of other readers.
If you’ve enjoyed this book I would be very grateful if you could spend just five minutes leaving a review (it can be as short as you like) on the book’s Amazon page. You can jump right to the page by clicking below.
