Lily
I’m melting. The lights, the pyrotechnics, the costume... Whoever said this was going to be glamorous never drowned in an ocean of their own sweat. Bad enough for the backup dancers in their skin-tight Spandex, but layer upon layer of gauze and silk and tulle, not to mention the headdress... Who came up with that?
Oh, right. Wayne did. Sadist.
I punish my guitar, riding up the scale. The crowd’s in a frenzy, practically storming the stage. It’s contagious, that energy. Intoxicating. I feel myself getting swept up in it, till I’m not sure if my head’s spinning from heatstroke or ecstasy. Everything’s shining: floodlights in my face, sparks cascading over my head and shoulders. Even my makeup’s glaring in my eyes, little rhinestone dazzles tickling my retinas.
Jed and Adina sink to their knees, faces turned up, hands grasping at my skirts. Almost time. The backup vocals swell as I mute my guitar, a haunting Gregorian chant, rising above the metal shriek. Five seconds...and....
My wings unfold with a mechanical snap, huge and black, sending feathers drifting into the audience. There’s an audible ahhhhh, but I don’t have time to soak it in. I raise my arms, throw my head back, and chant the last line like it’s being ripped from my throat: Pure joy, pure joy, enshrined in yesterdaaaay!
The lights cut out, plunging the stage into darkness. I slump against the column that keeps the wings out of sight till the grand finale. There’s feathers everywhere, clinging to my bare arms, stuck to my lip. At least the whole apparatus didn’t fall on me—this time.
Adina pats my arm as she moves back to her mark. “Almost there.”
I nod, grateful.
When the lights come back up, we go straight into our encore—Brightsky, always—simple, straightforward, good to wind down to. A few lighters flare to life in the crowd, but it’s mostly cell phones these days, backlit screens waving with the rise and fall of the music. I relax into my solo, coasting through the familiar chords. Jed and Adina are leaning back to back. Mark’s head’s drooping
over the drums. Even the backup dancers are barely swaying, but the music goes on, sharp and clear till the last chord fades out.
