Queen Isabella and her daughter Princess Joanna were both excellent horsewomen. Princess Joanna married ‘Philip the Handsome’ when she turned sixteen, but the marriage was an unhappy one and she became deeply tormented. After Philip died Joanna was confined to a nunnery and is known in the history books as ‘Joanna the Mad’.
Today it is very rare to find a true black horse in Spain and the legend says this is because Queen Isabella considered black horses to be possessed by the devil and ruled that black horses must be killed at birth.
The blue eyes and shield and bonnet markings of Cara and the Duchess can still be seen on modern-day horses in both Spain and in the Americas. The term ‘Medicine Hat’ was given to these horses by the Native Americans. It is their belief that these horses possess powerful magic. They say a Medicine Hat horse will choose their rider and keep them safe from harm: a protector, and the truest of friends.
Every girl dreams of becoming a princess. But this real life princess has a dream of her own…
