“Paul, there’s something else I want to ask you,” she said seriously.
“You mean about this case?”
“In a way.”
Steve was hesitating in a manner which was quite unfamiliar. She turned her back on him and looked into the fire. At last, she said in a low voice: “Was Maisie Delaway a very old friend of yours?”
Temple could not restrain a huge shout of laughter. When this had subsided, he began to look through his letters.
“I’d quite forgotten this,” he told her, selecting one from the pile. “It concerns both of us.”
“What is it?”
“An invitation to a wedding.”
“A wedding?”
“Yes, on December 29th, at Marylebone Register Office, Miss Maisie Delaway proposes to take the plunge for the fourth time with …” He paused, tantalisingly. “Guess who?”
Steve shook her head helplessly. “I haven’t the least idea. Who is he?”
Paul Temple chuckled.
“The bridegroom will be none other than Sir Felix Reybourn, the eminent Egyptologist!”
