“One way or another.” She slid her hands over his deliberately knotted arms and the tensed muscles of his back. “What if I hadn’t been a virgin? What if you hadn’t been the first man I’d slept with? What if I had been a...Connie or a Sally.”
“You are fated to be my wife.”
“I didn’t know how to say goodbye to you.” It had been such a worry.
“Wasn’t that some kind of clue to you? I didn’t think you were that dense.”
Her arms were up, her hands playing in his thick hair. “I know exactly what Billy Cougar was like. Just like you. They probably deported him from the U.K. for interfering and managing everybody. I’m not sure I can be your wife.”
He blew softly along her shoulder before he breathed the words there. “You’ll learn.” He kissed her shoulder, rubbing his chin in little circles and touched his hot tongue to her skin in a tasting way.
“See? I think that’s the attitude that got Billy deported. This has been so fast. I had no idea how devastating an affair could be.”
“This isn’t an affair. We are very seriously courting before we marry.” He raised up from her soft body and braced himself on his forearms. “I love you, Amy.”
“I strongly suspect that’s exactly what’s happened to me. I’m in love with you, too. I’d so hoped it was just a crush. It’s awfully soon to be so committed to you, but I really am.”
“I want you again. I’ll want you all my life. But there’s more. I want your mind. I want your companionship. I want you to share it all with me. As I will with you. We’ll be partners, parents, a team. I’ll wait until you understand it all. I’m very patient.” He moved impatiently, pleasuring himself, loving her, possessing her, being possessed.
She still didn’t realize it hadn’t been an impulsive affair. It was as it had been meant to be. A very successful mating between a man and a woman, which would last for all their lives.
“Ah, Chas,” she breathed the words. “I do love you.”
“I know.”
