Jopsen shrugged. “He escaped.”

Merken turned and faced the two men. “Pack your things, we’re decommissioning this station.” He looked around. “You did well in the face of superior force. You are all to be commended. Eisler, you’re going back to Asclepius. Jopsen, you and your men will be assigned to the science lab on Andaria Major.” He saluted then walked away.

“It was all for nothing.” Eisler watched him go. “We defended this station with our blood and sweat and they are going to scrap it.”

“There’s not much left of it, anyway. Well, you heard the commodore, pack your things.” Jopsen saluted Eisler.

When he reached his quarters, there was only a door frame left. The rest had been taken out by a grenade.

“Yours was the worst by far, Sir.” Smitty was standing next to him. “Most of my clothes have blaster holes in them, but at least I have clothes. The Marines took a stand here. Held off the Trilians for a long time.”

Eisler looked around. “At least packing will be easy. How did Pillins hold up?”

“I had to medicate him, Sir. He’s passed out on his bed.”

“He’s never going to be the same, is he?”

  “None of us will.”

The shuttle touched down on Andaria Major. Merken stepped out, only to be engulfed in a hug from Leona. “I was so worried. I heard you were in a battle. Was it pirates again?”

“Not this time. Someone far more powerful.”

“Is that the last of it, I hope?” She smiled up at him.

“No, I’m afraid it’s only the start of it.”

She shook her head. “Let’s not think about that. Now, you are safe. I’ve made you some dinner, come.” She grabbed his hand and led him into the stone house.
