Neil comes back in, followed by two women, and for a moment I don’t recognise her. It is Ann Lord but she looks so much more present in the world, coloured-in and animated. And the younger woman, with glossy hair and bright, intelligent eyes, must be Tina, a little older than the photograph, but still as vivacious. Mother and daughter are holding hands, taking cautious steps into the crowded room, shy smiles, and that’s when he steps over the threshold, looking just like someone I knew in a previous life.
Rusty hair, freckles and that kind smile. A hand reaching down to pull me from the pool.
That same hand reaches out now to take mine.
Milly skips from the kitchen. ‘Who are you?’
He crouches to look her in the eyes. ‘I’m Steven. I think you might be my sister.’
We hope you enjoyed this book.

Thank you to my wonderful editor, Madeleine O’Shea, for her ability to see the light through the trees. Her incisive, generous feedback, delivered with a cheerful smile, made the writing of this novel a pleasure. To Lauren Atherton, assistant editor, for her patient attention to detail and calm communication as the deadline loomed. To Anna Green for the beautiful cover, to Liz Hatherell for copy-editing and valuable feedback, and to the Marketing, Publicity and Sale teams who work so hard to get this book read.
I have been fortunate to have great early readers: Judy Rouse, Caroline Gilfillan, Jan Heffernan and Karon Nougher, who have read drafts, often at very short notice, and given thoughtful and honest notes. My brother, and fellow creative, Ian Culbard, has been a patient, compassionate ear throughout the writing of this book and appreciates, as no-one else can, how important it was to me. Thankyou.
Thanks to my lovely agent, Diana Beaumont, for sound advice, solid support and a great choice of cafes!
For providing me with shelter when I need to navigate meetings far from home and escape to write, I’d like to thank the Veacock family, Wendy Bowker, Aga Lesiewicz and Ola Walsh.
Thanks again to James Bailey, neighbour and police officer, for advice about procedure in the case of a missing child.
Tarnside Community Park is inspired by Ford Park in Ulverston, South Lakeland, which provides the people of our town, and our visitors, with a beautiful open space to enjoy. A proper grass roots initiative that shows just what can be done when a community work together for the benefit of all.
