Cain put his finger over her lips. “If I’m free to go, then anywhere I go I want you by my side. To the beach, back to Chicago, to the moon. Let’s do this together.”
A tear ran down Donna’s cheek.
“Are you sure that’s what you want?”
“From the moment I saw you that night when you went into the water. Fate brought me to you that night, and now it brought you to me. We’re meant to be together. I want to be together. I want you. Only you.”
“I love you, Cain.”
“I love you, Donna.”
An emotional tidal wave washed over both of them. A feeling of joy and an excitement for what was next to come. But first, to enjoy this moment.
As Donna cried Cain reached out to her and took her in and hugged her close. He leaned back in his bed and just held her.
Donna felt her journey had come so far, and now the past was finally that, the past. Her future began now. Her future with her man. Make that, their future.
EPILOGUE
“One, two, threeeee!”
Cain and Donna held hands as they leapt from the cliff face into the ocean.
“For most couples a kiss is enough,” the presiding minister said.
“They definitely are not most couples,” O’Sullivan said.
“That is for sure.”
It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon. Cain had planned the ceremony around high tide, amongst other things. He wanted the ceremony to take place where their journey began, and not only their journey together, but also their freedom from their pasts. The therapeutic powers of the ocean had done wonders toward heeling them both that night. The shock Donna experienced when she had to jump in and swim to the sub was the traumatic event she needed to help reset some of her childhood pain, and learn she could enjoy being in the water in the process.
And Cain’s battle inside the submarine had gone a long way towards his agoraphobia. He had held his cool and taken down El Toro that night. Mess with the bull, get the horns. Ironic that it was taught to a man named El Toro.
The couple popped up for air as the wave slowly pulled them in-and-out though the small saltwater passageway between the rocks. They held on to each other and kissed as much as they could. When they weren’t kissing they were giggling like little kids. No wonder locals had referred to the spot as Giggle Crack for as long as anyone could remember.
It was like a first date between two love-struck teenagers at a water park. But this was Mother Nature’s water park, and these were two adults…two honest, hard working, caring adults who deserved the best.
And the best is exactly what they got. Each other.
