  Chapter 8

The police bundle them in blankets and rush them to the hospital, where they were treated for hypothermia.

Pam visited. "You're an idiot, Fenrick."

"I know that now. Listen, I'm going to give half of my inheritance to you. And I'm going to catch up child support, and - "

"No. I don't want anything from you. Somehow I always get by."

"I don't want anything from you either. But I'm going to give you what I said."

Pam shook her head. "You're not coming to dinner. Got that?" Fenrick nodded his head. "And you're a horrible example for Sara, so stay away from her."

  "I'll change that."

From the bed beside him, Sledge said, "So much for happy endings." Pam shot him an angry look then left.

"You know something?" Sledge continued. "You've changed. We all saved each other in the water."

Fenrick laughed. "We weren't in any danger, but we still saved each other." They both laughed. "I'm going to make Jessica my business manager. Her salary will double."

  "Triple."

"Yeah, you're right. After what I put her through. Triple."

Jessica entered, all dressed. "I have to go," she said, "family. I heard what you said about my salary. My family - " She broke into tears, turned and left.

"Sledge, I have to know something. Was this some kind of Christmas ruse? Did you plan this?"

"No. I think the Grim Reaper planned this." They both laughed.

"Do you think we could still work together?" Fenrick asked.

"Well, after threatening to kill you?"

"I think you saved my life. You woke me from being a jackass."

"Well, I don't like law. I always wanted to be a comic book store manager."

Fenrick studied him for a moment. "Well, OK. I'll finance you for a year."

Sledge laughed heartily. "I'm kidding. I think maybe I seen I done something good. Maybe I should keep doing it. I think I like being public defender."

"When are you going to learn English?" Fenrick threw an empty drink cup at him and both men laughed.
