"Did Sadie Biggs and her father really know where it was hidden?" she asked, recalling the brutal beating Sadie had endured because Judge Absalom Percy had believed that they did.

Forbes shook his head. Now that the treasure had been found on Bell Island, the need for subterfuge was over. "There was never any evidence to that effect passed down through the family," he said. "And if Nathaniel did hide the stone, he didn't tell anyone where."

"It's our sacred duty to protect the environment in any way we can," Forbes declared with feeling, and Jaye could see the gleam of the fanatic in his penetrating eyes. "And if I had it to do over again, I'd do exactly the same thing," he vowed.

"I believe you're quite mad," Jaye stated with a great deal of conviction. And she left the unsettling presence of Daniel Forbes as abruptly as she had entered it.
