“Honestly?”
“Always.”
“No, I don’t. It’s just that in all the conversations we had I don’t think you ever really told me your story. It surprises me, but I’m interested in what that might be.”
“You’ve always been afraid of me.”
“Yes, I have.”
“But now you’re not.”
“No. Now I’m not. Just curious.”
Katherine sat back in her chair. “I read this thing once,” she said. “I forget where. It said that reading a book is a dangerous thing. It can make you find room in yourself for something you never thought you’d understand. Worse, that you never wanted to understand. Are you sure you want to understand me?”
“No. And I’m not sure I ever would understand you, even if I wanted to.”
Katherine’s smile broadened. She took a deep breath, and exhaled into visible relaxation.
“I’m glad,” she said. “Now. Where should I begin?”
