Deep Threat Page 22

by Scott Pratt

It was time to see what they had bargained for.

The shocking end to Jarvis’s college career had finally begun to fade. He had worked tirelessly all spring to get back in excellent shape, and there were no outward signs of his ordeal. Inside, no one could be sure.

All Billy knew was that a sense of renewal washed over them both. It was the first Sunday of the NFL season, and those big dreams were finally back on track. In Florida, no less.

The moment everyone was waiting for came early in the second quarter. Scoreless game. Dolphins with the ball at their own 37.

Quarterback Michael Brooks stood tall in the pocket and surveyed the field. Facing single coverage, his rookie receiver got half a step ahead on a post route, and Brooks lofted a perfect pass over the cornerback’s left shoulder. Jarvis made a fingertip grab, shed the would-be tackler and never looked back. Seconds later he was standing in the end zone while the adoring Miami crowd saluted its newest hero.

Jarvis froze like a statue, his arms outstretched and his eyes turned toward the heavens as teammates mobbed him. High above, the ecstatic Dolphins owner went around slapping hands with everyone in sight.

As he jogged off the field with his first NFL trophy ball, the Autumn Blaze pointed to the luxury suite and flashed that confident smile.

  Billy Beckett smiled right back.
