The Belt: The Complete Trilogy Page 50

by Gerald M. Kilby

The ship was as Scott remembered it: soft and plush and luxurious. They made their way out of the access shaft and down a long corridor to an area that Scott had remembered as the library. Sitting on the floor beside the large viewing window was a baby girl, no more than two years old, playing with some brightly colored toys. Two of the ship’s droids also seemed to be entertaining her.

The child looked up as they entered. “Moma.” She raised her arms to signal that she wanted to be picked up by her mother.

Miranda dutifully came over and lifted her up into her arms. The child eyed Scott with suspicion and then buried its head in its mother shoulder, peeping out again for another look at this unfamiliar person.

“She’s a bit shy of strangers,” said Miranda.

Scott slowly reached out and touched the child’s arm delicately with his finger, fearing that any other action might frighten her. He looked at Miranda. “Is she…?”

“Yes, Scott. This is Luca, and she’s your daughter.”

A hidden compartment in Scott’s brain opened up, and out of it poured a million years of evolutionary parental instinct. And at that moment, he knew he would never be the same again.

  About the Author

Gerald. M. Kilby grew up on a diet of Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clark, and Frank Herbert. This developed into a taste for Ian M. Banks, Stephen R. Donaldson, and everything ever written by Michael Crichton. He is currently working his way through the entire canon of Neal Stevenson.

Understandable then, that he should choose science fiction as his weapon of choice when entering into the fray of storytelling.

REACTION is his first novel and is very much in the “old school” techno-thriller style. Whereas, the COLONY MARS series and THE BELT series are more of a hard sci-fi feast.

He lives in the city of Dublin, Ireland, in the same neighborhood as Bram Stoker. And can be sometimes seen tapping away in the local Cafe, with his dog Loki.
