“Signore Bernardo will have plenty of servants to help, I’m sure.”
Damnation. He should demand that they return to London immediately, but he knew he’d have to do nothing short of plucking Gwen from the ground on which she stood and hauling her up the gangplank, which would never do. He knew no one here in Venice who might be able to stand in as escort to his sister and Ellie, save the proprietor and a couple of the women of the Palazzo d’Amore he’d just come from. “Well, who—?”
“The answer to the inquiry now dangling from your lips is you.”
“Me?”
“Of course. When you think about it—who else could do the job of chaperone so well as my own brother?”
It was his turn to stomp his foot. “Gwen, this sort of thing isn’t done!”
“And again I say, pish-tosh. There is a first time for every situation. Really, Weston. It’s as if you had your own holiday plans in mind.”
He sighed and scraped his palm over his mouth and chin. Conceding was the only solution. He couldn’t exactly tell his sister that he’d planned on spending his entire trip naked and at the mercy of courtesans.
“There. You see? Now, we have but a few hours before the ball.” She succeeded in maneuvering around him this time. “And I don’t want you upsetting Ellie, either,” she warned over her shoulder at him.
He fell into step by his sister’s side. “Of course not. I’m sure she’s scared enough as it is.”
“For your information, Ellie was only discomfited during the first day at sea.”
“Is that why she practically ran for cover a moment ago?”
She fully ignored his inquiry. “The only thing she fears now is your wrath.”
“Wrath? When have I ever displayed a single measure of wrath around her—or you, for that matter?”
She peered up at him with the devil’s own grin on her face. “Precisely.”
Wes clamped his jaw shut. Under the thumb of his twin was not at all where he wanted to be. Being the responsible one is about to take all the fun out of life. He shook his head and buried his frustrations as he accompanied his darling twin horror to Signore Bernardo’s palazzo.
