  "Please, Sam. I'm sorry. It hasn't been easy for me, either. I don't want to face tomorrow. I keep thinking of Atimboku, my brother. How he meant to kill me. But I don't know if he's alive or dead. I thought it might be best to end it between us, when you went to see those men from your government. Foolish me. For tonight, I'm still a foolish girl. Still your Sally. Time enough tomorrow to consider being the ruler of my country."

  "True," Durell said.

  "Come back to bed with me, Sam. For tonight." >

  He thought of Agosto and the formula. He hoped he had judged it correctly. He hoped Agosto had been lying; that the formula did not exist anymore.

  He thought of O'Hara and his grandfather.

  He thought of Deirdre and the house on the Chesapeake Bay and the skipjack and the blossoms of spring.

  More than the warm feminine fragrance of Sally made him stand up. It was here. It was now.

  He took her hand and walked with her to the bedroom.

  Tomorrow was another day. Tonight belonged to them.
