“No, it’s nothing. I like it here. Chicago’s too damn cold, and I like Valentina, too.”
“Is that so?” I teased, raising my eyebrow.
“What’s not to like?” he shrugged. “She’s pretty like Selena, but less likely to murder you in your sleep.”
I laughed and pointed. “Speak of the devil.”
Valentina and Selena were crossing the yard toward us, arm and arm. They wouldn’t be mistaken for twins, but there was no doubt they were sisters. I gave Valentina a big hug, and she whispered “thank you” in my ear.
Jorge grabbed his crutches and pushed himself upright. He and Valentina headed back toward the church, leaving Selena and I looking everywhere but at each other.
“So. What now?” I asked her.
“Home to Isla Grande. In a few weeks. I’m going to open a gymnastics school, just like I said. You should come visit some time.”
“I will. When I get tired of the charms of Chicago.”
She turned to face me straight on, and took both my hands in hers.
“Gracias,” she said quietly, and kissed me on each cheek, and then once full on the lips. I blushed, like only a redhead can, but stepped close and hugged her so she wouldn’t see. I took a deep breath and then stepped back, both hands on her shoulders.
“Goodbye,” I said. “Be good.”
“I will,” she said. “Take care of yourself, Kay.”
I hopped quickly into the Land Rover before I could start crying, started it up and threw it in gear. When I looked back out the window, she had already turned away, walking slowly off into the sunset.
