“Someone went through a lot of trouble to set what up?”

The ringleader smiled, pulled his belt from his pants, and said, “There comes a time when we all need to pay for what we've done in life. It's a time to pay the piper and feel the pain we've caused, and your time is now. It’s time, brother,” as he folded the belt in half.

Derrick screamed, “Somebody help me!” as he felt the belt slap across his arms as he blocked to protect his face from being struck, but nobody was coming to his rescue.

When a person says the phrase “for the rest of your life,” it usually refers to a significant length of time. For Derrick, though, the rest of his life lasted only another twenty-three grueling, painful, horrific minutes, and he met his end with a belt wrapped around his neck.

Back in their kitchen, Stephanie told Jacob the vague story she had just learned about Derrick's death. Although she didn't have the specific details of what occurred, Jacob's lack of surprise told her he was somehow behind it. She curiously asked, “What do you think happened?”

He pondered before answering, “I’m not sure, but whatever did happen, I’m sure he got what he deserved. In the end, he probably got exactly what he had coming, and he's never going to ruin another life again.”

Jacob’s response, coupled with the fact that Stephanie had been told Derrick was strangled with a belt, definitively answered her question, and she knew, without the slightest doubt, Jacob was behind whatever occurred in that prison laundry room. In an unexplainable and even somewhat twisted way, Stephanie couldn't have loved Jacob any more than she did at that moment. She knew Jacob was her ultimate protector, and her only reply was, “It's over.”

Sometimes, there’s just no going back…
