  YULE SOLSTICE: (A) The winter solstice, the celebration of which by Druids and WICCE was later co-opted by the Christian celebration of the birth of Christ at Yuletide, for which there is no evidence whatsoever. Christmas adopted most of the pagan Yule practices: decorating a Yule tree, hanging mistletoe, gift- giving, feast days, etc. The tables were later turned again in the Federation, where Wiccens adopted much culture associated with Christmas and reapplied it to the celebration of Yule.

  Joan Darris's world is an Earth with Marnies who hunt Touchables, with Gaylords and Ladies, with televised trials that sentence resisters to death in microwave ovens--an Earth that has eliminated war, but which has found new outlets for violence.

  Like the cautionary tales of Orwell and Huxley, the philosophical novels of Ayn Rand, the realistic speculation of Heinlein, the satiric fiction of Anthony Burgess, The Rainbow Cadenza uses the device of futuristic fiction to ask fundamental questions about the personal, political, and religious values to which we dedicate our lives, and to shed light on the problems we face today.

  The Rainbow Cadenza has been controversial right from its very beginning and remains controversial today.

  When submitted in outline to Playboy Books, it was turned down by an editor who wrote in her rejection that "I'm looking for other-world science fiction with some sex thrown in; the sex shouldn't be a major part of the plot or background." The Rainbow Cadenza may well be the only book ever rejected because the sex wasn't gratuitous.

  After appearing in hardcover from Simon & Schuster and winning the Prometheus Award, Baen Books withdrew an offer to reprint it in paperback after Schulman refused to edit out the book's most controversial sex scenes--scenes which set up the character conflicts for the climax of the story.

  Is this book just a cheap science-fiction soap opera? Or one of the best novels ever written? It's been called both. Some women say it's the best book they've ever read. It leaves others cold. How will it affect you? You'll have to read it to find out.

  About the Author

  J. Neil Schulman is a novelist, screenwriter, journalist, radio personality, filmmaker, composer, and actor.

  His dozen books include the novels Alongside Night and The Rainbow Cadenza, both of which won the Libertarian Futurist Society’s Prometheus Award for best libertarian novel, Escape from Heaven, which was a Prometheus Award finalist, and the short-story collection, Nasty, Brutish, And Short Stories.

  His nonfiction books include Stopping Power: Why 70 Million Americans Own Guns, endorsed by Academy-Award-winner Charlton Heston, The Frame of the Century? in which he suggested an alternate killer who could have framed O. J. Simpson for the murder of his ex-wife, and The Robert Heinlein Interview and Other Heinleiniana.

  His latest book is The Heartmost Desire, which in Part One "Unchaining the Human Heart: A Revolutionary Manifesto" J. Neil Schulman makes the case that liberty is a necessity for the attainment of happiness. Part Two is his autobiographical "I Met God — God Without Religion, Scripture, or Faith," in which this former atheist describes the experiences that led him to conclude the existence of God, but still distance himself from all religions or scriptural dogma.
