He looked at the circled phone numbers, knowing there was more. “And this traces back to?”

“An old friend. Or enemy, depending on your viewpoint,” she amended.

It was Lucia’s moment and she was drawing it out. He knew she received precious little recognition even though he had no doubt that a great part of his operation would grind to a halt without her talents.

Still, he wasn’t feeling very magnanimous at the moment. All morning he’d been fighting this feeling that something was wrong.

“I’m not in the mood for games, Lucia. Joshua’s taken off on holiday—”

Her mouth curved. Only he would be that dismissive of his operatives’ private lives. “They still call it a honeymoon, I believe.”

“Whatever.” His tone bordered on exasperation. “With Kiley gone that leaves us without two of our key operatives. The ones in training are still too green to bring up—”

“In your opinion,” she pointed out.

He raised his eyes to hers. His was the only opinion that mattered in this case. “Must you contradict everything I say?”

“No, not everything,” she allowed cheerfully. “Just—”

Lucia didn’t get a chance to finish. A soft bell sounded, announcing another e-mail’s arrival on his desktop.

Lazlo retreated to his computer with Lucia directly behind him. Hitting a key to bring up the message, he experienced a feeling of déjà vu. There was a single line across his screen.

  Ready for round 2?

The phone behind him began to ring.
