  Chapter One

Zack snuck a look over at Serena in the passenger seat, singing along with the song that was blaring out of the car radio, her long red curls bouncing as she bopped her head to the beat. She turned to him and smiled in that heart-stopping way she had. Life was good. He had a great job at Club Libertine, the same place that Serena worked part-time while she worked on her doctorate. They’d been living together for more than three months, and the sex was incredible, when he got it.

Problem was, he was firmly in the Friends-Zone, or more precisely, the Friends-With-Benefits-Zone. This meant that he had to sit through her talking about the cute guys at school and the latest guy she was dating, but the guys never lasted long, and she was back in his bed.

Lately, though, that hadn’t been enough for Zack. He’d pursued her for months, trying not to come on too strongly. She was young for twenty-three, having been brought up by her grandparents and been homeschooled. Even college and grad school were close to home. But when her sister moved to Seattle, she decided to do her PhD at Washington State. She moved into her sister’s home, but not long afterward, her sister moved in with her boyfriends, leaving an empty bedroom. Then Cindy moved in for a week, but now she was living with Zack’s own brothers, Liam and Connor, and the bedroom was empty again.

Somehow, he’d persuaded her he’d be a great roommate. They’d made love the first night, but then Serena laughed about them christening his room and then her room and the living room, and he’d been in seventh heaven. Unfortunately, it had been weeks before they’d tumbled into bed again.

Zack had told himself to be patient. She’d come around to seeing him as more than a friend. He’d get her addicted to the pleasure he could provide in bed and let her learn to love the man he was outside the bedroom. But fear that he’d scare her off made him tentative in his approaches. He was a dominant like his brothers, but in a different mold. He wasn’t as overt about it as they were, but he was dying to dominate her in the bedroom, but he was afraid if he showed his true self, she’d bolt. And he was a little shy and unsure about how to proceed. He’d never had a permanent sub of his own before, so he wasn’t quite sure how to bring the subject up.

So he was taking his time. Each time they made love, he pushed her a little. The last time, he’d tied her wrists to the bed frame and teased her mercilessly before allowing her to come while he moved inside her.

He also knew that the goings-on in the club intrigued her. She usually worked in the office, but sometimes she helped out in the main reception area. He didn’t think she’d ever entered the club when the members were there. He wasn’t sure if she didn’t think she’d like seeing Doms and subs having sex or if she though she’d like it too much and felt guilty because of her upbringing.

The PhD she was working on was in sociology, and one of her courses was about human sexuality. He’d planned to help her out with the practical side of her course project. He’d already dropped a few hints about giving her some practical demonstrations. She’d always kind of blushed and changed the subject. She was supposed to try to see a specific lifestyle or behavior from multiple perspectives. He was going make sure she chose him to be her study subject. He’d been dropping hints for the last week, and he thought she was coming around. He thought tonight wo
uld be a good time to put the plan to her outright and end the beating around the bush. He’d offer to let her use him as her test submissive, and then during the second half of the project, he’d show her just how good it could be as his sub as she got to experience the other side.

It was a perfect plan, except for one thing. Luke Davis.

Luke Davis was the new House Dom at the club. With Duncan working on the expansion plans and spending a lot of time away from the club, they’d had to hire a replacement. Luke was an ex–Special Forces commando, with ten years in the military. He was in his midthirties, almost a decade older than Zack, and as dark as Zack was fair. They were of similar height, but Luke probably had forty pounds on him, all of it muscle. He always dressed in a vaguely military style, wearing khaki rather than leather, with the dog tags hanging down over his impressive bared chest, the real deal and not a fashion statement.

His dark hair was still almost militarily short and he generally covered his eyes with aviator shades. Zack had seen them uncovered once and realized why he generally hid them. They were a strange light color, almost silver, that were set off by his thick dark lashes. When he stared at you with his eyes uncovered, you felt like he was looking deep inside you. No wonder he had all the uncollared subs, and not a few of the collared ones, hot for him.

Zack watched the uncollared subs when Luke went by. They were all dying to play with him. Most nights at the club, Luke was working, but sometimes he came in on his night off and picked one of them to play with. He always did his scenes in one of the private rooms rather than in one of the public areas, so Zack wasn’t sure what went on, but the subs were always deliriously happy afterward and then disappointed when he didn’t come back to play again. It seemed that Luke wasn’t looking for long term, but all the subs hoped they could convince him to collar them permanently. But, so far, he never did and didn’t show any signs of wanting to.

And now, Zack was worried because Serena had shown an interest in Luke. She was always saying “Luke said this” or “Luke did that.” He was sick to death of the name Luke. And yet, under other circumstances, he acknowledged in a burst of self-honesty, they might have been friends. Luke was smart and funny and nice in a taciturn way. He did more listening than talking, except, apparently, with Serena.

Was she hoping to play with Luke one night? Was Luke hoping to get Serena to play with him? Zack had gotten used to her occasional college boy she dated. As far as he could tell, she hadn’t actually slept with any of them and always returned to his bed. But he felt Luke might be different. And, to be honest, Zack had been counting on being the one to ease her into the life of a sub to his dominant and carry out her training and then eventually collar and marry her so they’d be tied together forever. Clearly, he might have to rethink his life plan if she allowed herself to be trained by another dominant. He laughed to himself. Well, duh, he thought. He couldn’t get into a relationship with her if she was with another man.

Or could he? His brothers shared Cindy. And Serena’s sister Michelle lived with two men who were not brothers but shared. Was that what was missing from their relationship? Did they need another man?

Zack immediately dismissed the thought. He’d never seen Luke play in a ménage. And his brothers were twins who had grown up sharing everything. Mac and Sean had been friends since they were kids and were as close as brothers. Nope. He was just being crazy to think that inviting another man into their relationship would help him get Serena to make a commitment.

They pulled into the underground parking and headed up the parking elevator to the main lobby. They really didn’t live that far from the club, but since they got off quite late, a car was a necessity. And since Serena didn’t have one, Zack was happy to give her a lift. It was one small way to encourage her to depend on him.

They were just stepping off the elevator when Serena slapped his arm to get his attention. “Isn’t that Luke? Luke, Luke. Over here.”

Of course it was Luke walking in the main door. He was unmistakeable. Zack could see all the late-leaving female office workers, and a few of the male ones, checking out Luke’s well-developed arms in his tight T-shirt.

Luke grinned at them and walked over. “Hey, Blondie. Hey, Red.” He leaned down and kissed Serena on the cheek. Zack felt a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach. This was more advanced than he thought. He’d have to make his move sooner than he’d planned.

The three of them boarded the elevator to the employee entrance. Zack found himself in the back while Luke stood beside Serena in the front. They were laughing and joking, and now her hand was on his bicep, squeezing gently as she told him about her big school project and how she was hoping to convince Zack to help her out.

In other circumstances, this would have made him very happy. She had obviously been listening to his hinting around. But now she’d told the whole thing to Luke, and Zack had a terrifying feeling in the pit of his stomach that somehow Luke was going to change her mind and convince her that he’d be the perfect test Dom.

Zack silently seethed, but then the door pinged and they stopped moving. Serena and Luke exited and then looked back smiling, and Zack found himself smiling back at both of them.

It was going to be a long night.

  Chapter Two

The night seemed to drag. Mondays and Tuesdays were the quietest nights. Tomorrow, Wednesday, would see an uptick, with Thursday being even busier. Friday and Saturday nights would be packed, and everyone would be working. Instead of closing at two, the club would say open until four, and the receptionist would have to be extra vigilant, and not only would many of their own members show up and not be very happy if they couldn’t get in, but so would prospective members who didn’t understand that new members had to be recommended by an existing member and then pass a background check before they were admitted. Money, social position, or even extreme attractiveness couldn’t get someone through the door if they weren’t a card-carrying member in good standing.

And then there were the journalists. Serena hated working the desk when they came around. At least once a month, some sleazy writer tried to get in, looking to make a buck by selling a prurient article about the sexual perversions of the high and mighty, but, so far, they’d managed to keep them all out.

Serena found herself at reception most of the night. The regular receptionist, Carrie, was off sick, and her usual replacement, Cindy, was on vacation. Serena couldn’t even pass the time doing her homework.

The club had cameras installed everywhere. It was for the protection of everyone involved. There were recordings, but they were recorded over every twenty-four hours. The cameras were trained all over the public areas, and the House Doms wore a floor piece. If Serena saw something going on that concerned her, she’d call one of them to go over and take a look.

The cameras also showed the private rooms. Again. It was a safety issue. Sometimes accidents happened. Occasionally, a Dom would ignore a sub’s safe word. It was up to Serena to keep an eye on things to make sure that any force was consensual. It was quite common for Doms to provide an outline of the scene they were planning, especially if it included “consensual non-consent” which meant the sub wanted to be subdued physically, so that there were be no misunderstandings.

Tonight, only two of the private rooms were occupied, and both we being used by experienced Doms that she knew were extremely trustworthy, so she just checked in periodically and left them to their fun and spankings the rest of the time.

At midnight, she was doing a quick sweep of the cameras in the rooms that were supposed to be empty and was surprised to find that one of them wasn’t. She was just about to call Luke when she realized that it was him in the room. She checked the schedule and realized that he was on a break. She wasn’t sure why he chose the room to relax in. There was a very nice staff lounge.

She saw him take off his vest and stretch and then lie down on the padded leather table that Doms usually strapped their subs to. She could feel the butterfl
ies in her stomach. She might love Zack, not that she’d told him yet, but that didn’t stop her from appreciating a fine man like Luke. Especially since Zack seemed to be moving so slowly. Even when she told him made-up stories about other guys, he was all Mr. Calm and Cool, even though she could see that he was upset. If he didn’t get moving soon, she was going to have to start topping from the bottom out of sheer frustration.

She watched Luke check his watch and close his eyes. She almost jumped out of her skin when she heard his voice in her earphones.

“Serena, kitten. Can you wake me up in fifteen? I’m taking a quick power nap.”

  “Uh, sure, Luke.”

She switched off the camera. Damn. How had he known?

  * * * *

Finally her shift was over. She was in the lounge reading her textbook while Zack finished up, checking for stragglers before locking up, waiting for him to drive her home. But she couldn’t concentrate. Her mind kept going back to Luke. She sighed. She knew Zack was jealous of Luke because he thought she was interested in Luke, and she was, in a way. There was something about his natural air of command, honed, she was sure, by his years in the military, that called to her naturally submissive side.

But it didn’t mean she wanted him instead of Zack. In fact, she found her mind drifting, fantasizing about being with the both of them. Her sister had two men who shared her. They were both Doms who liked nothing better than whipping her ass with a riding crop before fucking her together, or so she’d told Serena one girls’ night out when they’d all been drinking, but then she got all embarrassed and wouldn’t say more when Serena tried to ask questions. Cindy, too, was with two men, Zack’s brothers Liam and Connor.
