He served only four years of his sentence. On January 13, 2004, he used his bed sheets to hang himself in his cell at Wakefield Prison. It was reported at the time that he had killed himself because if he had reached the age of sixty – he was 58 at the time – his wife would not receive the NHS pension to which she was entitled. Harold Shipman remained manipulative and controlling even in death.
