When he leaned to reach for the phone, Maggie tightened her grip on his hand. "Don't you dare," she warned, then softened the scolding with a smile, as he laid back down beside her. "Woodrow will do just fine," she assured him. "You'll see. He loves Laura as much as we do."
Pulling his hand from hers, Ace slid it beneath her shoulders and pulled her to his side. "You're right," he said, hugging her close. "All my brothers are crazy about the kid. Not just Woodrow."
She laid her head on his shoulder. "Everything's going to work out all right, Ace. Laura was meant to be with us. I feel it in my heart."
He turned his lips to her forehead. "You'll make a wonderful mother, Maggie. And I want to be a good father to her. Better than my father was to me."
She lifted a hand to cup his cheek, emotion filling her throat. "You already are, Ace. You love her. That's what's most important."
Covering her hand with his, he smiled down at her. "I'm one lucky man to have you as my wife. I love you more than I ever thought was possible."
"And I love you, Ace."
He snuggled close and bumped his nose against hers. "How do you feel about giving Laura a couple of brothers or sisters?"
"Oh, Ace," she said tearfully. "I think that would be wonderful!"
He pressed his lips to hers. "Think we ought to start working on that now?"
She drew back to look at him in surprise. "Now?"
He shrugged. "If we don't hurry up and get another baby for those brothers of mine to spoil, they're going to ruin Laura for sure."
Laughing, she looped her arms behind his neck. "In that case, I guess we better not waste any more time."
