Phoebe - Not Quite A Pheonix Page 7

by Unknown

She whisked me out to the beach, chattering on about balance and harmony, dropped to the sand in the lotus position and pulled me down beside her, instructing me to look inside myself. Several hours later, Annabelle jumped to her feet and announced in a high, reedy voice, “You, my dear, are a ‘Not-Quite Phoenix’ and that makes you all the more special.”

I was pleased to hear that I was special, but had no clue how or why this proclamation had come about, and sure as hell had no clue what a ‘Not-Quite Phoenix’ was. The Elder must have noticed my confusion, because she began to explain. “There is a parable recorded in the Book of Legend that talks about a Queen with no wings. As the story goes, she is the one of great power and untold knowledge. It is by her wit that she will lead her people and restore their numbers. One of my favorite quotes comes from this tale… ‘Her Fire burns bright, fueled by her gracious heart and keen mind. With her cat by her side, the flock will soar proudly once again.’ So you see, Queen Phoebe, you are destined for great things.”

Annabelle left and I spent the afternoon trying to decide if she was incredibly wise or totally whacked. Grant and Jax returned to the carriage house where we were staying until after my official coronation. Plus, we were still trying to decide if we were going to relocate to Crete or to Grant’s castle in Scotland. Yeah, my man’s a King. Pretty cool, huh?

The guys were loaded with bags from the market, promising a gourmet dinner. Not only was my husband-to-be sexy as hell, he was also a damn good cook. A quick hug from Jax and a toe-curling kiss from Grant made up for their absence, but I couldn’t let them off the hook that easily.

“You two missed a fun afternoon. Annabelle really knows her stuff,” I chuckled, pretending to be busy by washing the lettuce and tomatoes.

Grant appeared at my side. “Was she able to help, babe?”

“Not exactly, but she did say I was special.”

Kissing the top of my head, Grant agreed. “I already knew that.”

  “Me too,” Jax chimed in.

“Thanks dorks, but she meant really special. She called me a ‘Not Quite Phoenix’”

Grant stopped what he was doing, his eyes wide with surprise. “Really?” he asked.

“That’s what she said,” I shrugged.

“Do you know what this means?”

“I only know what the crazy albatross told me. Why don’t you enlighten me?”

“There’s a story about a phoenix and her cat. All the cubs hear it from an early age. I can’t really remember how it goes, but I can call my mom and find out.”

“No need. I have a feeling I’ve already heard it.”

His brow furrowed and he asked, “You have?”

“Yeah, Annabelle told me.” I detailed everything she’d said, to which Grant whooped and hollered and called his family, who were as happy as he was that we were the couple of legend. The part Annabelle didn’t tell me was that Grant’s and my union would also replenish the nearly extinct lion shifters. Maybe she didn’t know that part…I have no clue. Jax said we needed to open champagne, and after the week and a half I’d had, I thought it sounded like a great idea.

I guess I should finish by telling you that I finally figured out the moral of my story…well, my story so far…

I may be the ‘Not-Quite’ Phoenix Queen, mated to the King of the Lions that the scribes predicted, but deep down inside, I’m just a girl that can call her Fire, who loves a guy that can purr and roar and kiss me silly. And in the grand scheme of things…what more can I ask for?
