  OLIVER

  2016

  * * *

  I was sitting in my office, behind my laptop, checking my inbox. My heart skipped a beat, when I saw it. An email from [email protected]. It could only be from her.

  My dearest Oliver,

  * * *

  I was determined to keep up the appearance. For them. For Jan and my girls. I didn’t want to hurt them, like I had hurt us in the past.

  I tried and did my best, but then when I saw you last November I understood that it was just impossible to keep on pretending to be happy.

  I had been pretending for so long now, that after all these years I had actually succeeded in going through a day without thinking about you and I had convinced myself that I was over you. But now that’s changed and it would take me another two decades to bring myself to that state of denial again.

  Because the truth is you were right. You and I are soulmates and soulmates can’t help but eternally search for each other. They are compelled to, to be able to feel whole again.

  Jan understood this. So after four long months of him trying to forgive me and me trying to forget you, he decided to let me go. And I didn’t stop him because it was an unfair fight and something he wasn’t able and I wasn’t willing to put him through.

  I know it was 19 years ago, but I need you to know that I have missed you ever since I left you that day at the airport.

  And now I can only hope that I’m not too late and that you’re willing to come find me and put an end to the absurdness that is us not being together.

  I will love you always, Erica

  When she’s not teaching English to her high school students, she’s either writing or curled up with a good romantic novel; one that sucks you in and then makes you regret that the story has come to an end, for you'll miss its characters for days.
