His foot slid across a pebble, scraping across the pavement. The monsters’ heads snapped up. Their faces were coated with fresh, shiny blood. Apollo’s blood.
The man let out an ear-piercing scream. Dylan cried out as he scrambled up. But the monster was faster. A hand clamped onto Dylan’s ankle, pulling him across the pavement. Dylan frantically kicked out. His foot connected with flesh, but the monster only snarled and continued to pull.
A roar and a screech.
Dylan recoiled from the sound and from the bright lights suddenly blinding him.
Fast footsteps.
The man wrapped his other hand around Dylan’s foot and pulled hard. The concrete scraped along his stomach.
A wet smack.
The monster’s grip loosened and Dylan clawed at the pavement, desperate to drag himself away. He pushed himself up. He didn’t care where he was going. He just had to get away.
A heavy thump.
A strong hand locked around Dylan’s wrist and he cried out, pulling frantically.
“Baby.” With the single whispered word, Dylan froze. The hand pulled at him again and Dylan collapsed against his mother. He wrapped his arms around her, burying his face into her chest and sobbing.
“I’m here, baby.” She wrapped her arms tight around him, her embrace protective and comforting. He could feel her chest heaving as she cried with him.
Shrieks rose in the night. They were close by. Dylan tightened his grip on his mother, his fingers digging into her back.
“We have to go.” Her voice was tight, fearful, as she scooped him up, sliding into the driver’s side of the car and depositing him on the passenger seat.
She looked into the rearview mirror and grimaced. “Get down on the floor, baby.” She motioned for him to get down on the floorboards. Dylan shook as he did as he was told, curling up into a tight ball.
“I love you, baby,” his mother whispered, smiling at him from the driver’s seat. “We’re going to be OK.”
Warmth flooded through Dylan as he settled into the floorboards. “I love you too, Mommy.”
A message from R. L. Blalock:

Reviews give me a chance to see what’s working or not working. I consider all the feedback I get from readers very seriously. It’s my goal to make each book better than the last. Beyond improving my work, reviews also help other readers decide whether or not to spend their hard earned money on my books.

About the Author
R. L. Blalock’s love of reading started young. As a child, her father would read stories to her before bed every night. In middle school, she and her best friend bonded over books and writing. Her love of zombies, though, started later in life. In 2008, when R. L. Blalock first watched the remake of Dawn of the Dead, she instantly fell in love with the genre.
Born and raised in Sacramento, California, R. L. Blalock now lives in St. Louis, Missouri with her loving husband and precocious three-year-old daughter. Their family also includes three pets: Memphis, a Pitbull/German shepherd mix who prefers to spend his days cuddling; Dixie, a Pit bull/Akita mix who greets everyone with excited squeals and enough kisses to last a lifetime: and Pazuzu, the Green-Cheeked Conure who thinks she’s a dog.
By day, she gets the pleasure of waking before the sun is up to serve coffee to all the morning commuters in Lake St. Louis. Despite the early hours, the job has its perks. She can get her hands on as much coffee as she wants.
During what precious little free time she has, R. L. Blalock likes to read whatever dark and twisted book she can get her hands on or scare herself silly with the same nightmarish kinds of video games.
