The Iggy Chronicles, Volume 2 Page 4

by Spencer Quinn

We hopped in the Porsche, an old and beat-up Porsche, maybe, but still among the living, if you see what I mean. Bernie drove, and drove fast, glancing back now and then in what I would have called fear if it hadn’t been Bernie. I rode shotgun, chewing on an hors d’oeuvre or two. I think it’s expected. Isn’t “party favor” the expression?

  PAW AND ORDER

“If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog.”

  —Harry S. Truman

After setting things right in a case that took them all the way to the Louisiana bayou, PI Bernie Little and his faithful canine companion Chet decide to take the long way home and pay a visit to Bernie’s girlfriend, Suzie Sanchez, an up-and-coming journalist now living in Washington, DC. Suzie is working on a big story she can’t talk about, and when her source, a mysterious Brit with possible intelligence connections, runs into trouble of the worst kind, Bernie suddenly finds himself under arrest.

Meanwhile, Chet gets to know a powerful DC operative who may or may not have the goods on an ambitious politician, along with some snacks that could lead Chet dangerously astray. Soon Chet and Bernie—and, not to be outdone, Suzie—are pulled into a shadowy international conspiracy, battling unfamiliar forces under the blinking red eyes of a strange bird that Chet notices from the get-go but seems to have slipped by everybody else. Most menacing of all may be Barnum, a guinea pig with the fate of the nation in his tiny paws.

Combining humor, intrigue of both the political and animal varieties, and genuine insight into the ways of our canine companions, Paw and Order is an irresistible tail-wagging chase through the dark side of America’s capital. In a dog-eat-dog town where secrets are power and a friend today can be an enemy tomorrow, Bernie soon discovers it takes a nose like Chet’s to smell a rat.
