Here and Now Page 20

by T. Renee Fike

The drive back to school is long and boring, without company. I’ve spent my entire summer break with Evan and Owen; at separate times of course.

I already received my paperwork, so I know which dorm I’m in, thankful that Dani and I decided to room together again. Next year, we are thinking of renting a house off campus, which is exciting. We tried to this year, because mom said she and dad would pay for it, but we looked too late and nothing was available.

I get to school around two and message Dani that I’m here. Dani came to visit me for a week over summer break; she talked to Owen and even tried to help with his therapy. He knows he has us all pulling for him.

“Finally, I thought you’d never get here,” she says as she walks towards me. I pop the trunk, she grabs a few boxes, and I grab a few bags and a box, before shutting the door and heading inside. It takes us a few trips, but we get my car empty and then it’s the unpacking part; so much fun.

“Have you talked to Lily?” she asks, as we walk past a girl who looks similar to her.

I shake my head no, thankful that wasn’t Lily. Lily moved into the sorority house, so she won’t be in our dorm building this year, which I’m kind of thankful for. The fewer run-ins with Lily the better.

Lily eventually found out about Evan and I and she bitched at Evan for over twenty minutes. She said he was so dumb and how could he date someone like me. Someone like me…and to think she was once my best friend. She did confront me one time at a party, telling me I should enjoy it now, because a guy like Evan could never be completely satisfied by me. I snapped, put her in her place and haven’t seen or spoken to her since.

“I so wish I could have seen you tell her off,” Dani laughs, causing me to laugh too.

“It was so refreshing,” I say, being truthful. Telling Lily off that day, felt great. Who is she to judge me? “I’m good if I don’t see her or talk to her for the rest of my life,” I inform her. Lily isn’t a good person and there’s no need to be around people who only try to bring you down.

The rest of the evening is spent unpacking and catching up with Dani, before meeting up with Evan.

My sophomore year of college is harder than my first year, but I have things down now on what professors’ want and I know where everything is this year. I feel a lot more prepared than last year.

Evan and I are doing wonderful, we hang out and it’s public now that we are dating. I get some looks from some of the girls, but I just ignore them and continue to enjoy my relationship. He’s an amazing guy and I feel extremely fortunate to be able to say he’s my boyfriend.

My weekly calls continue to happen with Owen and we always discuss school and how his therapy is going; what we don’t discuss is Evan and me. He doesn’t want to know and I’m not going to push it on him.

Life so far in my second year of college is off to an amazing start and I’m looking forward to more amazing things to come.

  Epilogue (10 months later)

It’s been ten months and things with Evan are still going great, we are stronger than ever, even with Lily trying to cause some issues and break us up during the school year, it didn’t work. We both agreed it’s best to just ignore her and not be friends with someone so vindictive.

My second year of college is over and I couldn’t be more excited. Dani and I were able to find a house to rent and will be living here this summer, instead of going home. Evan’s excited because he plans to stay over all the time and we won’t have to deal with some of his immature fraternity brothers.

Evan asked if I wanted to get a place with him, but Dani and I had plans since last year, and she’s still my best friend, I couldn’t and wouldn’t do that to her. She’s proven over and over how great of a friend she is and I’m so thankful to have her in my life.

She’s been dating Jonah, a guy we go to school with for the past six months and things seem to be going great. I haven’t seen her, this happy in well ever, come to think of it. They mesh really well, and they even match a lot. She still has her dark purple hair, while his changes from red, to green, to blue; he even dyed it purple to match Dani’s hair at one point. They truly fit perfectly together.

As for Owen, my brother, the ultimate warrior, it’s been over a year since his accident and he is up and walking again. He’s not running marathons, but he’s able to do some of the things he loves, unfortunately basketball isn’t in that area yet. He’s working on getting back on the court and takes it a day at a time. He is truly the strongest man I know and I would do anything for my brother.

He’s coming to stay with us for a week or two this summer; that way he can hang out with Evan, along with seeing me and getting out of the house. He starts taking classes at the junior college back at home to catch up on some of the general education classes he missed due to his accident and then will decide what school he wants to go to, to finish everything up. He’s decided that he wants to be a Physical Therapist and I’m not surprised. After his accident and learning how hard it was for him to deal with everything, I decided that I wanted to go into counseling. I want to be able to talk with people to help those overcome pains, problems, and issues. I have two years of school left, but now that I know my major, I feel like I’m ahead of the game.

Will Evan and I be together forever, who knows, I’m only going to be a junior in college. I just know I’m enjoying my life, the here and now and taking life one day at a time.

  The End!

  ABOUT ME

I’m from Pennsylvania, born and raised in a small town where everyone knows everyone. When I’m not writing I’m pursuing my Master’s degree. Aside from writing and school, I enjoy hanging out with my friends, reading a good book, watching football, and hanging out with my nieces and nephew. This year is beginning a new adventure for me as well…I’m going to be a new mom in a few short months and can’t wait for that new journey to begin.
