Leather & Lace Page 7

by J. A. Fredericks

I don’t make it all the way inside the small room before a familiar, muffled voice barks from the back door, “—don’t give a shit! Things have changed now that my sister’s back and hanging around the MC!”

  Axel. Talking about me.

  This should be good.

I enter the bathroom, leaving the door open just enough so I can still hear, but won’t be caught eavesdropping.

“What the fuck does that change?” a feminine voice asks.

“If Remmy forgives her and takes her back in, she’ll be so far up his ass he’ll go back to thinking he shouldn’t trust me because I know she doesn’t and I know she won’t sit back quietly if she suspects something! This whole thing could come crumbling down and we’d all be royally fucked!”

“Then convince Remmy that he can’t take her back in!” the woman answers. “I don’t care, just make it happen! Make shit up if you have to! Find a better way to send her to prison!”

I cover my mouth before a startled cry escapes.

My own brother set me up and sent me to prison for three fucking years?

“Motherfucker!” I hiss under my breath. Every fiber of my being wants to race out there and pummel him for even thinking such a thought. I even open the door wider, ready to make good on the idea.

But I stop. What would that accomplish? And what ‘thing’ is he worried about falling apart?

If I go out on my own, it’d be easy for my brother and whoever else he’s with to set me up. I should know because I was on my own the first time it happened. Now more than ever I need the help of the club. But how do I know who to trust and how can I stay around Colt any longer without falling in love?

Oh my god, I’m thinking about fucking love. What in the hell has gotten into me?

As if just thinking about it summoned him into existence, a disheveled Colt appears from the direction opposite my brother, eyes lit with worry and hair wild around his face. “Harley!” He rushes to me, cupping my face in his hands. “Shit, darlin,’ you scared me to death when I couldn’t find you anywhere in the apartment! What are you doin’ here so early and why’s your stuff outside on your bike?”

Staring into the beautiful eyes that have staked their claim on my heart, I realize this is the moment I have to make a decision. A decision that will affect the rest of my life and maybe his.

  Acknowledgments

First and foremost, I have to thank my dear friend and fellow author Maria Araya for finally convincing me to watch Sons of Anarchy awhile back. Though I had been riding Harley with my husband for nearly a decade and knew the ins and outs of bike culture, the experience of watching Jax and the MC was eye-opening, to say the least. You’re one of my biggest rocks, girl, and I wouldn’t be able to keep doing this without you! Love you to the moon and back and can’t wait to see you in July!

Speaking of rocks, I have to put friend/author/smut sister L.E. Chamberlin in the spotlight for putting up with my daily outbursts, manic modes, and crazy ideas. I can’t believe it took us until last fall to finally cross paths, but I’m so glad we did and can’t wait to finally meet you in person! You’ve become one of my favorite people (as well as the inspiration to release my sexy side) and I probably couldn’t have done this series without you!

Special thanks to Violet Vaughn for being so amazing and convincing me to try this serial business. You’ve been one of the best mentors a gal could ask for, and I can’t wait to buy you a drink in NYC! Thanks for all your tips and advice!

Big thank you to Karen with Eloquent Editing for being so amazing and supportive! I’ve really enjoyed getting to know you and love that we have so many interests in common. I look forward to our future projects together!

Shout out of epic proportions to Keeana, Nikki, Chauntel, Jennifer B., Chloe, Flavia, Jennifer H., L.E., Maria, Pamela, Sarah, Tosha, Tricia, and Melanie for being the most supportive street team a girl could ask for in addition to being the awesome ladies that you are. It means the world to me that you’re so excited about this series and I adore your enthusiasm! XOXO

A big thanks to my fellow smuffins for being such a fun, open, supportive, and outgoing group (especially those who were beta readers). You ladies literally keep me going every day, whether through laughter, swoon worthy pics, or heart-filled posts and I desperately wish I at least knew a few of you IRL so we could hang. You girls rocks!

As for my local friends who have to put up with me in person, drinking with me at the bars and taking me to smutty movies, a million apologies, but you guys truly are the best and I literally don’t know what I’d do without you.

Last, but by far not least, thank you from the bottom of my heart to my amazing husband (even if he never sees this) for putting up with all my shit these past twenty-some years and for feeding my Harley addiction. You’re the only biker I have eyes for, so you better get some tattoos. Just sayin.’
