Swan took a deep breath, and thought of the sack of the Turkish camp, and the burned bodies in the upper town, and the dead peasants, and Šárka. But the image that came most strongly was of the Greek woman, Maria, in her borrowed brown nun’s habit. And that of Sophia Accaiaoulo di Ferenze, and what she might think of a count, kneeling to ask her hand in marriage.
He had thought that perhaps he would avoid war. His hands tightened on the sill of the cardinal’s window, and then, slowly, he released them. He also gave thought to the enormous diamond in his purse, once the property of the Sultan. He turned, and bowed.
‘Yes, Eminence’ he said. ‘I accept.’
