The World Hungers: A Post-Apocalyptic Story (The World Burns Book 3)

“Put him on with me,” he screamed and a gasping Duncan did so, not having enough breath to acknowledge.
Duncan climbed on one of the quads behind a woman, clutching his heart and the two women drivers exchanged worried glances.
“You get on with me Hon,” a fierce looking woman said to Patty.
Bobby kept one hand around the unconscious man with his left arm and muscled the quad with his right. The Four-Trax had an automatic transmission so he was able to steer and use the throttle, though his arm would later be almost too sore to move.
They pulled to the house, where Martha was already setup. She was fussing over Blake when they arrived and both Lisa and Karen took Duncan under the arms and helped him walk into the house. Patty followed Bobby who was carrying Neal. A tiny woman with short hair was crying over the man they’d saved from Kenny while a little boy held his hand as the woman named Martha cut away his jacket. A bandage had already been tied across his pant less leg. She looked up and saw the others come in.
“Blake’s going to be fine. He’s in shock; get fluids going she shouted to a tear streaked Lisa. Lisa looked between Duncan and Martha before leaving her husband.
“Karen, get Duncan laying down flat on his back. Then go get my bag that’s on the porch.”
“I’m ok. It isn’t that bad,” Duncan gasped.
“Just do it.”
The woman hurried off and Patty watched helpless as Neal was set up, held in place by another woman who was holding a gauze wad on the hole in his lower back. Martha took one look at Neal and felt his pulse. She gave a worried look at the stranger and the new woman and pulled his eyelid open. Neal stirred for a moment, his eyes focusing on Patty.
“I do love you. I really do…” he said as his eyes closed for the last time.
Patty pulled him close, not believing, not wanting to believe it, not capable of believing it, not accepting it and called his name over and over and over as they worked.
Karen returned and Martha shoved two pills in Duncan’s mouth, who gagged, then dry swallowed. She then put one under his tongue and told him to hold it. She turned to Lisa and told her to pray she got the dosage right, she wasn’t a medical doctor. Almost immediately Duncan’s face relaxed and his breathing evened out.
“Told you I was ok,” he said again, “easier this time.” Duncan told his wife
Lisa ran her hands through his hair. Patty took in the chaos as it happened around her. Seconds turned to minutes, minutes added up and still she held onto Neal until a crying little boy pulled on her shoulder.
“Please lady, come help me. My mommy can’t. She’s with Daddy.” Chris told her.
Reluctantly she let herself be pulled away and towards the kitchen.
“Where’s my son, where’s Weston?” Lisa asked.
Patty paused and turned to look at the woman, taking in her features.
“Was he the guy with Blake?”
Lisa stiffened, immediately noticing how the young woman had used the past tense.
“Yes…” She said in a quiet voice.
“He wasn’t in the truck with them,” Duncan said.
“The guy from the hunting ranch, he murdered him.” Patty told her.
Just then, the base radio that was installed in the living room squeaked and a voice came out of the speaker.
“David, this is Gerard, come in? David, this is Gerard. Orders have changed and our detachment will be swinging by your way in one week, do you copy?”
