“It’s not the news I expected.” The corners of her mouth turned downward in a show of sympathy. “But it was the news I wanted.”
“What? Are you serious?” Watching her face light up, knowing her happiness was all for me, made me love her that much more.
“You can now call me Detective Bennett.”
There was a point in my life where all I could seem to focus on was my career. I’d put my family second and paid dearly for it. Even though the accident wasn’t my fault, I still bore a sliver of guilt. I didn’t think that would ever go away completely, but at least I was happy again, something I never thought I’d be able to say.
Quinn was my family now, and I made sure she came first all the time, cutting back on extra shifts at work and forgetting about the dream I once had of making detective.
Or so I thought.
My woman could be rather persuasive when she wanted to be, usually when she was naked and beneath me. I’d agree to anything that came out of her mouth in that state, including pursuing an advancement in the department.
“Oh my God!” she cried. “I’m so proud of you.” Wrapping her arms around my neck, she smothered me in kisses, and it wasn’t long before our celebration turned heated. While she worked on relieving me of my pants, I snagged the belt loosely tied around her waist and tugged. Her dress slid apart, and for a moment, I was caught between lust and anger.
“You didn’t have on anything underneath? You went to work dressed like this?” Landing on the latter, the edge to my voice told her I wasn’t happy about this at all. But I couldn’t look away. The sight of her breasts, hardened nipples, and shaved pussy held me captive.
“Of course not.” She slapped my chest. “But I figured if the news wasn’t good, I could cheer you up.” I immediately ditched the anger and dialed up the lust another notch.
“This is why I love you.” I cupped her face and lost myself in her gaze for a moment. “And why I want to spend the rest of my life with you.” My declaration had the desired effect I hoped it would.
“Are you saying what I think you’re saying, or are you just horny?” She laughed, but the sound was cut short when I reached into my pocket and pulled out a little black ring box.
“Is it wrong if I said both?” I couldn’t stop the spread of my smile, her eyes widening with every breath we took together. “People often say words can’t express how I feel about you, and I always thought that was a cop-out. But now I get it. I understand why they use that cliché line because to try and catalog every feeling, thought, and physical reaction is impossible. But I’ll give it a try.”
I wiped away one of her tears with my thumb during a momentary pause. “I’m incapable of feeling any pain when you’re near me. You pulled me out of the darkest time in my life, and I’ll never be able to repay you for that. I’m in awe of you, of your huge heart, and your compassion for other people. Sometimes when you’re not paying attention, I watch you and my heart races, but at the same time, it’s hard for me to breathe. I get scared you’ll be taken from me, yet I’m excited to plan our life together.”
I took a step back and dropped to one knee. Prying the small lid open, I reached for her left hand. “Quinn Nicole Harris. Will you marry me?”
She nodded while she tried to find her voice.
And then finally, she uttered my new favorite word.
“Yes.”
